Role Summary

Principal Packaging Engineer responsible for strategic and operational leadership in secondary packaging design and development for combination products. Focus on implementing new standards and technologies, coaching peers, leading development activities, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain awareness of internal and external developments.
  • Ensure Lean systems and continuous improvement.
  • Coach peers across AstraZeneca about combination products for enhanced performance and development.
  • Lead development activities for responsible products or projects.
  • Implement new practices to drive value and improve standards.
  • Create and sustain a high-quality, innovative function focused on scientific excellence.
  • Ensure delivery of SHE and cGMP compliance, adhering to AZ and external regulatory standards.
  • Operate confidently within a global organization, preparing for future challenges.
  • Develop strategy for platform technology delivery with technical leaders.
  • Maintain a technical support model with outstanding customer service for AZ Manufacturing sites.
  • Actively use Risk Management to assess situations and escalate opportunities appropriately.
  • Develop solutions to diverse problems requiring sophisticated judgments.
  • Exhibit interpersonal skills that influence and shape the function's image.
  • Communicate effectively to set clear direction and motivate staff.
  • Embed Lean principles within the team, driving continuous improvement.
  • Manage resources and financial forecasts for responsible products or projects.

Qualifications

  • Required: +10 years of experience in packaging engineering with a focus on secondary packaging design and development for combination products.
  • Required: Advanced degree in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Required: Expertise in design controls methodology, including risk management and verification activities.
  • Required: Knowledge of CAD tools and simulation software (e.g., Finite Element Analysis) for predictive modeling of packaging performance.
  • Required: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Required: Understanding of the drug development and commercialization process from development to life cycle management.
  • Required: Understanding of SHE, cGMP, and Lean principles.
  • Required: Experience in Operations and/or R&D with project leadership in a matrix organization.
  • Required: Excellent communication skills and ability to build relationships with customers and stakeholders.

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Experience working with multiple teams in CMC and related functions (e.g., GPD, Operations, Global Supply, Marketing Companies).

Education

  • Advanced degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, or related field.
