Principal Scientist, Drug Discovery (Research and Development)
Responsibilities:
- Identify new molecular entities and technologies for use in animal health, from internal labs or external partners (human pharma/biotech and academia).
- Advance novel targets by leading research programs from ideation through early research and proof-of-concept to development.
- Interface with researchers, senior management, and external partners; operate in a matrix structure to obtain resources across Medicinal & Process Chemistry, in vitro Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, Disease Models, Formulation Development, and Safety & Toxicology.
Education:
- Required: DVM/VMD and a PhD in experimental pharmacology.
Required Experience:
- Minimum 8 years industry/pharmaceutical research in drug discovery or preclinical research with a focus on in vivo pharmacology.
- Advanced knowledge of pharmacology, disease mechanisms, and related preclinical models.
- Expertise in at least one area: oncology, diabetes, respiratory & immunology, cardiology, pain & inflammation, reproduction, drug delivery, or biotechnology.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical regulatory aspects including GLP, GCP, and GMP.
- Manage multiple projects (budgets, contracts, timelines).
- Independently plan, recommend, and complete research programs.
- Excellent communication/interpersonal skills; create executive-level presentations and documents.
- Experience preparing patent applications.
- Travel: 10%.
Preferred Experience:
- Board certification in Pharmacology.
- Project management skills within pharmaceuticals.
- Experience managing collaborations with outsource providers/vendors/contractors and academic institutions.
- Experience working with business development to identify and license external technology opportunities.
