Role Summary

The Payroll Manager will oversee all aspects of Vericel’s payroll operations, ensuring accurate, compliant and timely processing for employees across multiple states. This role will drive process efficiency, governance, and continuous improvement while partnering with HR, Finance, Legal, and external vendors to ensure a seamless payroll experience for our employees. The Payroll Manager role will also assist in administering Vericel’s equity program contributing to a seamless employee experience. This position requires a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, organization, and effective collaboration across departments.

Responsibilities

  • Process bi-weekly payroll for exempt and non-exempt employees in multiple states.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll tax laws in various jurisdictions.
  • Update and review employee and payroll records in ADP system.
  • Process commissions, bonuses, miscellaneous payments and employee deductions correctly.
  • Process/manage equity related transactions with stock administration vendor.
  • Prepare restricted stock vesting and tax withholding releases.
  • Ensure proper tax treatment for stock options, restricted stock and ESPP transactions.
  • Manage and strengthen integrations between payroll software, equity and benefits.
  • Prepare journal entries and account reconciliations for payroll related items.
  • Filing of applicable regulatory forms for matters related to payroll.
  • Conduct research on payroll-related issues and provide clear and concise responses.
  • Generate, provide analysis and maintain payroll-related reports.
  • Communicate with employees at all levels and departments regarding payroll/stock compensation matters.
  • Maintain proper documentation in payroll folders.
  • Prepare year-end reports and W-2 forms as needed.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and audit readiness in compliance with SOX.
  • Collaborate with HR to ensure accurate administration of leave programs, benefit deductions and other employee changes.
  • Perform ad-hoc projects and other assigned duties.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; CPP or other payroll certifications preferred.
  • 8+ years of payroll experience.
  • Knowledge of payroll principles and best practices.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State & Local employment tax laws.
  • Experience with working under strict deadlines and delivering payrolls with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Experience managing payrolls with large volume of stock options, restricted stock and ESPP transactions.
  • Strong proficiency in excel and other Microsoft Office tools to support data accuracy, analysis and payroll reporting.
  • Strong proficient with payroll software.
  • Self-motivated with strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and detail orientation with the ability to manage multiple high-priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with external and internal peers.
