Patient Access Liaison (PAL) — field-based patient access and reimbursement specialist responsible for supporting patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and sites of care in navigating insurance coverage and reimbursement pathways for Amgen therapies.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a resource on patient access and reimbursement for infused and specialty therapies.
- Assist patients, caregivers, and providers with insurance benefits, prior authorization, and reimbursement processes.
- Identify and resolve access challenges (coverage questions, prior authorization barriers, denied claims).
- Provide education on coding and billing considerations.
- Develop relationships with patients/caregivers via phone, virtual, and in-person engagement.
- Secure written/electronic patient HIPAA authorization within assigned geography.
- Assess patient needs; educate on coverage considerations and steps to obtain prior authorization.
- Provide co-pay assistance, national foundation, and free drug program information when appropriate.
- Educate physician offices and sites of care on coverage pathways and reimbursement processes.
- Support infusion centers/providers with reimbursement questions related to patient cases.
- Investigate access challenges before/after infusion; review denied claims and next steps.
- Escalate complex/systemic reimbursement issues to internal stakeholders.
- Partner cross-functionally (Market Access, Medical Affairs, Advocacy, Case Management, Site of Care) and share payer/reimbursement field insights.
Basic Qualifications
- Level 5: Doctorate OR Master’s +2 years OR Bachelor’s +4 years OR Associate’s +8 years OR HS/GED +10 years (patient services and/or access/reimbursement).
- Level 6: Doctorate +2 years OR Master’s +4 years OR Bachelor’s +6 years (patient services and/or access/reimbursement).
Preferred Qualifications
- Buy-and-bill/infused therapy experience; rare disease/orphan drug; clinical background.
- Reimbursement knowledge (prior authorization, appeals, denied claims); HIPAA/FDA; compliance (incl. OIG).
- Analytical/problem-solving; written/verbal communication; manage complex cases; cross-functional field team experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office/CRM/AI and relevant systems; patient support program knowledge; compliance/privacy; learning agility; decision quality; stakeholder engagement.
- Respond rapidly to urgent access needs; operate in matrix environments.
- Travel up to 50% (occasional overnight/weekend).
