Position Summary:
The Pathologist Assistant I assists assigned Pathologists with pathology work for studies, including pathology report review, macrodissecting/microdissecting tumor areas, and may include H&E marking with ordering appropriate tests or microscopic evaluation of CISH. Performs other assigned quality pathology tasks.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist Pathology/microdissection department day-to-day.
- Read pathology reports to determine specimen primary site.
- Identify tumor (and normal tissue as needed) on stained NFR slides and collect marked areas for molecular analysis using micro/macro techniques.
- Assess tumor content and order appropriate testing; assess CISH stains for gene amplification.
- Maintain clean workstation; identify missing/wrong info and open discrepancies.
- Request Pathologist assistance with case questions.
- Organize slides/data, generate tables, support other requests.
- Prioritize/triage specimens; handle/dispose of specimens and chemical waste per lab procedures and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Maintain confidentiality; perform QC/QA and maintain documentation/logs.
- Report test quality and/or patient/employee safety concerns; use Laboratory Information Systems.
- Maintain laboratory procedures and equipment maintenance; communicate non-conformities; may assist training peers/new hires.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s in lab/medical science or technology with ASCP Cytotechnologist/Pathologist Assistant/Histotechnologist (or other applicable/internal training).
- OR certified Medical Doctor (foreign trained acceptable).
- OR B.S. with specific course/training requirements (60 semester hours minimum; clinical lab training approved/accredited or at least 3 months documented high-complexity specialty training) plus adherence to testing protocols.
- Experience: 0–1 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s or PhD in relevant field; relevant pathology technical qualifications; 3–5 years experience.
