Position Summary
The Pathologist Assistant I assists assigned Pathologists in organizing and performing pathology activities for studies, including pathology report review and macrodissection/microdissection of tumor areas. May include marking of H&E (tumor and/or normal tissue) and ordering appropriate tests based on tumor site, or microscopic evaluation of CISH. Performs additional assigned pathology tasks.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist the Supervisor - Pathology Operations in day-to-day operation of the Pathology/microdissection department.
- Read pathology reports to determine primary specimen site.
- Identify tumor (and normal tissue when needed) on stained NFR slides and collect marked areas for molecular analysis using micro/macro techniques.
- Assess tumor content and order appropriate testing (when needed).
- Assess CISH stains for gene amplification (when able).
- Maintain a clean workstation.
- Identify missing/wrong information and open discrepancies as necessary.
- Request Pathologist help for case questions.
- Organize slides and data; generate tables; assist with other requests.
- Prioritize and triage specimens; handle/dispose of specimens and chemical waste per procedural manual; ensure regulatory compliance.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Perform QC/QA tests; maintain documentation and logs.
- Report test-quality concerns and/or patient/employee safety issues to a Supervisor or Safety Officer.
- Use Laboratory Information Systems (working knowledge).
- Maintain laboratory procedures; ensure compliance with policies and recommend changes.
- Operate, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on microdissection equipment.
- Communicate laboratory problems/non-conformities to Supervisor/management.
- Collaborate to support a positive work environment; may assist with training peers/new hires.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelorโs degree in chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology with one of: Certified Cytotechnologist (ASCP), Pathologist Assistant (ASCP or AAPA), Histotechnologist (ASCP), other applicable lab certification, or internal training.
OR
- Certified as a Medical Doctor (foreign trained acceptable).
OR
- Bachelor of Science degree outside the above categories plus: 60 semester hours (or equivalent) including either (a) 24 semester hours medical laboratory technology, or (b) 24 science hours with 6 chemistry, 6 biology, and 12 chemistry/biology/medical lab tech in any combination; plus either ABHES/CAAHEP-approved clinical lab training or at least 3 months documented lab training in each specialty for high-complexity testing.
- High degree of care/attention and strict adherence to clinical testing protocols.
- Experience: 0โ1 years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masterโs or PhD in related laboratory science/medical technology.
- Relevant pathology technical qualifications.
- Experience: 3โ5 years.
