Position Summary
The Pathologist Assistant I assists assigned Pathologists with organizing and performing pathology portions of studies. Responsibilities include pathology report review, macrodissecting/microdissecting tumor areas, and may include H&E marking (tumor and/or normal tissue) with ordering appropriate tests based on tumor site, and/or microscopic evaluation of CISH. Performs other quality pathology tasks as assigned.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist Supervisor (Pathology Operations) with day-to-day operations of the Pathology/microdissection department.
- Read pathology reports to determine specimen primary site.
- Identify tumor (and normal tissue when needed) on stained NFR slides; collect marked areas using Micro and Macro techniques for molecular analysis.
- Assess tumor content and order appropriate testing (when applicable).
- Assess CISH stains for gene amplification (when applicable).
- Maintain clean workstation; identify missing/wrong information and open discrepancies.
- Request Pathologist assistance for case questions.
- Organize slides/data; generate tables; assist with other requests.
- Prioritize/triage specimens; handle/dispose specimens and chemical waste per procedural manual and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Maintain confidentiality; perform QC/QA with required documentation/logs.
- Report test quality and/or safety concerns to Supervisor/Safety Officer.
- Use Laboratory Information Systems; assist with related duties/special projects.
- Maintain laboratory procedures; recommend process changes.
- Operate/troubleshoot/preventive maintenance of microdissection equipment.
- Communicate non-conformities and lab problems; collaborate to promote positive work environment.
- May assist in training peers/new hires.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical/biological/clinical/medical lab science or medical technology with: ASCP Cytotechnologist, ASCP/AAPA Pathologist Assistant, ASCP Histotechnologist, other applicable certification, or internal training.
- OR certified Medical Doctor (foreign trained acceptable).
- OR B.S. degree outside the above plus: 60+ semester hours including either 24 hours medical lab tech OR specified science/chemistry/biology breakdown; completion of ABHES/CAAHEP clinical lab training OR 3 months documented high-complexity lab training per specialty.
- High attention to clinical testing protocols; 0–1 years experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in relevant science/medical technology.
- Relevant technical pathology qualifications; 3–5 years experience.
Additional Requirement (as stated)
- Continuing Education: minimum 12 hours annually.
