Position Purpose:
Stoke Therapeutics is seeking a Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team. The Patent Agent will report to the Head of Intellectual Property and support Stokeโs intellectual property strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
Patent Preparation and Prosecution
- Draft responses to USPTO actions and coordinate responses to foreign office actions with outside counsel and foreign associates.
- Draft and assist with provisional, non-provisional, PCT, continuation, divisional, and foreign patent applications.
- Support global patent prosecution strategy for R&D programs.
- Work with outside counsel to ensure high-quality, strategically aligned filings.
- Review and analyze prior art, office actions, search reports, written opinions, and examination reports.
- Maintain and update patent docket and portfolio records, invention disclosures, and related IP documentation.
Invention Capture and Portfolio Development
- Partner with scientists to identify patentable inventions and develop patent protection strategies.
- Review invention disclosures, research updates, publications, posters/abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts for IP implications.
- Deliver internal IP trainings (invention disclosures, publication review, confidentiality, filing strategy, and IP hygiene).
- Maintain and develop a global patent portfolio aligned to scientific, clinical, and business objectives.
Patentability, FTO, and Competitive Intelligence
- Conduct patentability, landscape, freedom-to-operate, validity, and competitive intelligence searches.
- Monitor competitor filings, publications, clinical developments, and patent office proceedings.
- Prepare summaries/analyses of third-party positions and competitive IP developments.
- Support internal IP risk and opportunity assessments.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Registration to practice before the USPTO.
- Bachelorโs degree in a relevant life science/chemistry-related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Approximately 3โ5 years patent prosecution experience.
- Experience drafting/prosecuting biotech/pharma/chemical/life sciences applications.
- Experience preparing responses to USPTO office actions.
- Familiarity with foreign prosecution with outside counsel/foreign associates.
- Experience with patentability/prior art/landscape/FTO/competitive intelligence searches.
- Strong technical judgment; excellent written and verbal communication; attention to detail; ability to manage multiple deadlines; collaborative.
Preferred:
- Technical/patent experience involving antisense oligonucleotides, RNAi, mRNA technologies, or related modalities.
- Law degree or state bar admission.
Location & Travel:
Hybrid role (3+ days/week onsite) in Bedford/Waltham, MA; ~5% travel.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Anticipated salary range: $121,000โ$155,000; plus annual bonus and equity.
