Job Description

General Summary:

The North America Commercial Finance Leader is a key member of the Vertex Finance organization and leads the team supporting Vertex’s rapidly growing and diversifying commercial portfolio in the US and Canada. This role will provide proactive financial leadership to Vertex’s SVP of North America Commercial Operations and the North America Leadership Team in support of driving growth and optimizing profitability of Vertex’s expanding portfolio of medicines.

Vertex’s North America region has ~$7B in growing revenues and increasing commercialization investments. In the US, commercial business units support marketed products in Cystic Fibrosis, Hematology (Sickle Cell Disease & Transfusion Dependent beta Thalassemia) and Pain. Additionally, Type 1 Diabetes and Renal commercial business units have been established to prepare for potential US launches in the coming years.

The role is a key advisor to drive growth and profitability, pricing and reimbursement decisions and maintain a culture of controls and compliance. This role requires a strong expertise of the drug development, commercialization, and launch processes.

Reporting to the VP of Commercial Finance, the role partners closely with functional leadership team members to provide financial direction and strategic insights to enable delivery against short term and long-term goals, including identification of key value drivers and Business KPIs. The NA Commercial Finance Leader will continue to build processes and procedures as we grow our portfolio to ensure risks are appropriately managed, efficiencies are realized, systems are improved, and stakeholder expectations are exceeded.

NA Commercial Finance Leader will lead a growing team of Finance business partners based in Boston to drive commercial performance, provide strategic decision support, influence decisions and identify opportunities to invest, drive cost efficiencies and mitigate risks.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Accountable for all Finance support to the SVP of North America Commercial and their areas of responsibility, managing North America revenue and significant operating expenses and providing strategic decision support, influencing at the highest level major strategic investment decisions critical to Vertex’s long-term growth and success.
  • Leads the financial performance management process (budget vs. actuals, forecast etc.), with a focus on influencing business operations and decisions through expert analysis of business performance and working with business partners to address evolving needs of the business.
  • Partners with SVP of North America Commercial their LT to lead the annual budget, and long-range strategic planning process.
  • Ensure organizational effectiveness through efficient resource allocation including people, processes and external resources alignment with business strategies.
  • Utilizes data, analytics, and metrics to identify ways of creating value, allocating resources and mitigating risks.
  • Understands market trends, opinions, and reactions to industry and competitors and provide strategic insights that will help inform senior management investment, operating, and financial decisions.
  • Develops innovative solutions to support business-case-based decision making for investments.
  • Builds and manages a high-performing North America Finance team that meets increasing needs and requirements across the business and helps drive the overall organization forward.
  • Develops and coaches team members to encourage growth and new opportunities and creates an atmosphere of inclusivity across the team.
  • Partners with Human Resources on Workforce planning.
  • Coordinates with other members of the CFO organization including Corporate Finance, Accounting, Tax and IR to maintain a continuous improvement mindset and promote strong communication and efficient processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance or Accounting. MBA and CPA a plus.
  • Typically requires 15 years of relevant experience in a finance managerial role demonstrating strong technical and analytical skills and a track record of success working in a team-based environment or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Significant knowledge of the drug development and commercialization process, including launch experience across different diseases, modalities and geographies and US pricing, reimbursement and market access systems.
  • Strong business acumen and judgment, and knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends.
  • Extensive experience in leading cross-functional teams and processes; able to manage through ambiguity and influence with and without authority.
  • Highly skilled in building/developing/leading a high performing team.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective strategist with ability to successfully drive and execute financial initiatives.
  • Strong project management ability.
  • Proactive, organized, and comfortable managing shifting priorities in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Possesses a continuous improvement mindset, with flexibility and ability to adapt to change.
