Job Description
The Medical Science Liaison is a field-based scientific expert who supports the scientific and business objectives of a designated therapeutic area across the product life cycle for a specific geography/territory. Serves as the primary communicator of AbbVie science with healthcare professionals and develops professional relationships to provide medical and scientific support, facilitating exchange of scientific information, education, and research.
Responsibilities
- Master scientific content, materials, disease state, and therapeutic area to serve as a scientific expert.
- Identify, develop, and maintain relationships with thought leaders, academic centers, and researchers to access current medical and scientific information.
- Present disease-state and therapeutic landscape education and scientific information about AbbVie products to healthcare professionals.
- Support research initiatives and physician-initiated projects, including site evaluation/identification, recruitment, investigator meetings, external expert identification, and collaboration management.
- Act as an internal medical/scientific resource for medically accurate, balanced, and regulatory-consistent communications and materials.
- Collaborate with internal cross-functional partnerships; support in-field commercial teams with account plans to meet shared business objectives.
- Provide ongoing training to medical affairs, field sales, and other internal personnel; maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge of product use and competitor data.
- Practice strategic segmentation and optimal resource utilization.
- Ensure compliance with corporate/divisional policies and accurate, timely HCP interaction documentation; maintain annual expenses within assigned budget.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree required (PharmD, MD/DO, PhD, or APP such as Physician Associate/Nurse Practitioner) in a relevant scientific discipline; doctorate strongly preferred.
- Typically 0β2 years relevant experience.
- Problem-solving and analytic skills to translate territory and corporate needs into actions.
- Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other software; excellent written/verbal communication.
- Ability to apply skills in Scientific Storytelling, Identifying Mobilizers, and Active Listening.
- Meet health care industry representative (HCIR) credentialing requirements (e.g., background checks, drug screens, immunization/vaccination proof).
- Ability to learn and convey clinical and non-clinical technical information; engage audiences and help retention.
- Ability to travel up to 75%.
Additional/Requirements
- Candidate must live in the territory or self-relocate within it: Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
