Role Summary
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based scientific expert who supports the scientific and business objectives of the Rheumatology therapeutic area across the product life cycle. They are the primary communicators of AbbVie science within a designated geography, serving as a conduit of information to healthcare professionals and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The role includes clinical development and pipeline support as needed, with subject matter expertise for Upadacitinib (Rinvoq), Risankizumab (Skyrizi), and Adalimumab (Humira).
Responsibilities
- Identifies, gains access to and develops professional, customer-centric relationships with external experts in assigned geography (Michigan, northern IN, northern OH).
- Develops, executes and maintains high-impact territory plans, including HCP and Investigator engagement plans aligned with medical objectives; uses data and analytics to maximize opportunities.
- Delivers on territory plan objectives, meets deadlines, and achieves annual goals; generates and documents meaningful data point observations (DPOs).
- Practices core capabilities in segmentation, DPOs, and optimal resource utilization.
- Provides education on disease state, therapeutic landscape and AbbVie products across the lifecycle to healthcare providers and researchers.
- Maintains mastery of scientific content and continuously educates self on market issues, product knowledge, and new therapeutic areas relevant to responsibilities.
- Supports research initiatives requested by R&D, Clinical Operations, and Medical Affairs; assists with physician-initiated projects including site evaluation, recruitment, investigator meetings, external expert identification, and collaboration management.
- Creates and maintains cross-functional relationships; collaborates with in-field commercial teams to develop and execute account plans.
- Ensures compliance with Corporate and Divisional Policies; accurate and timely documentation of HCP interactions and management of annual expenses within budget.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree required (e.g., PharmD, MD/DO, PhD, APP); Doctorate strongly preferred in health science or clinical discipline.
- 2+ years of clinical, scientific/research, or industry experience preferred.
- Strong problem-solving and analytic skills to translate territory needs into actionable objectives.
- Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint; excellent written and verbal communication.
- Ability to learn and apply scientific storytelling, mobilizer identification, and active listening.
- Ability to convey clinical and non-clinical technical information effectively and engage audiences with clear retention of information.
- Must meet HCIR credentialing requirements to enter facilities; may include background checks, drug screens, and immunization proof.
- Demonstrates leadership aligned with company initiatives.
- Willing to travel up to 75% of the time; flexible travel and weekend availability required.
- Reside within the territory or be willing to relocate to Michigan.
