Role Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based scientific expert who supports the scientific and business objectives of a designated therapeutic area across the product life cycle for a specific geography/territory. The MSL is the primary communicator of AbbVie science within the geography to healthcare professionals, develops professional relationships, and provides medical and scientific support for AbbVie initiatives in assigned therapeutic areas.

Responsibilities

  • Focus on mastery of scientific content, materials, disease state and therapeutic area to establish themselves as a scientific expert.
  • Identify, develop, and maintain professional relationships with thought leaders, academic centers, and researchers in assigned areas to access current medical and scientific information.
  • Present scientific information and education related to disease state, therapeutic landscape, and AbbVie products to healthcare professionals across the product lifecycle.
  • Support research initiatives and physician-initiated projects, including site evaluation, recruitment, investigator meetings, external expert identification, and collaboration management.
  • Serve as internal medical and scientific resource for disease-state and product communications, ensuring medical accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional teams to develop and execute account plans supporting shared business objectives.
  • Provide ongoing training to medical affairs, field sales, and other internal personnel; maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge of product use and competitor data.
  • Practice core capabilities in strategic segmentation and optimal resource utilization.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate/divisional policies and maintain accurate documentation of interactions and expenses within budget parameters.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree required (e.g., PharmD, MD/DO, PhD, APP) in a relevant scientific discipline; Doctorate strongly preferred in health science or clinical discipline.
  • Typically requires 0–2 years of relevant experience.
  • Problem solving and analytic skills to translate territory and corporate needs into actionable objectives.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply Scientific Storytelling, Identify Mobilizers, and Active Listening.
  • Must meet health care industry representative (HCIR) credentialing requirements to enter facilities in the territory (background checks, drug screens, immunization proof, etc.).
  • Ability to learn and convey clinical and non-clinical technical information effectively; engaging communicator.
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% of the time.
  • Residence within the territory or relocation to South Florida required.
