Position Summary
The Molecular Training Specialist performs molecular laboratory techniques including blood processing and buffy coat extraction, RNA/DNA extractions, PCR, Next-Generation Sequencing, equipment maintenance, laboratory inventory, and sample tracking/receiving. Works independently with minimal supervision; provides technical expertise, ensures data quality, and supports process improvement and training.
Job Responsibilities
- Maintain regulatory compliance (FDA, CLIA, NYS, ISO, CAP, etc.).
- Maintain exceptional quality standards for molecular analysis.
- Create and document competency samples.
- Track and document employee training (including cap checklists).
- Complete data analysis and concordance for competencies/training samples.
- Support high complexity projects and process improvements.
- Support validation and new assay implementation; gain proficiency and train molecular technologists.
- Track continuing education hours.
- Meet departmental deliverables/goals; adhere to QC policies; document QC activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
- Document corrective actions for deviations from performance specifications.
- Track/compute performance metrics (turnaround times, issue reviews, case tracking).
- Document/review accreditation pre-inspection paperwork and checklists.
- Perform periodic molecular department audits; support QC/QA improvements.
- Capture/trend/analyze quality data monthly; drive actions.
- Provide departmental/companywide training on regulatory requirements and QC processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical/biological/clinical/medical laboratory science or medical technology.
- 4+ years clinical lab experience; at least 1 year high complexity molecular testing.
- Proficiency in molecular workflows and assay troubleshooting.
- High accuracy/efficiency across multiple assays.
- Knowledge of quality control/monitoring methodologies.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); basic business internet use; skilled office equipment operation (fax/copiers).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in related field.
- Experience in FDA-regulated industries.
- Knowledge of lab safety, biohazards/chemicals, and QC regulations.
- Fast-paced, deadline-driven work capability.
- Strong communication, teamwork, customer service focus, and continuous improvement drive.
Physical Demands (high level)
- Computer work plus inventory/ordering; manual dexterity for sterile techniques; lift up to 30 lbs; possible exposure to fumes/biohazards.
