As the Metrology System Engineer, you will be trusted to conduct metrology method development and support new product development for medical device products. Investigates and evaluates existing technology and design new instruments, methodology, or processes as needed for medical device development. Conducts and provides technical direction to one or more projects where the complexity of technical problems involved requires the application of advanced knowledge of optical and ophthalmic devices. This role is based in Johns Creek, GA and a typical day will include: Lead metrology development projects, including the design, implementation, and validation of new instrumentation and measurement methods. Provide technical advice and recommendations to influence internal and/or external contacts. Make decisions impacting scope of work where appropriate. Define instrumentation strategy to meet product performance and regulatory requirements by surveying relevant technical fields and selecting appropriate technologies. Serve as a subject matter expert in optical metrology systems, including low coherence interferometry, optical coherence tomography (OCT), machine vision, and/or wavefront sensing. Design components, fixtures, or major portions of a functional system or technically advanced prototype, or specific products for medical device/science/technology. Apply engineering principles to the research and development of medical device/science/technology and/or provide engineering expertise to support development projects. Assure continuity of products and processes, lead validation of instruments and methods for medical device development and method transfer to production. Provide technical leadership through design reviews, assignment and closure of action items, and cross‑functional collaboration. Use intermediate to high level analytical techniques and/or previous experience to identify the most appropriate option to adapt or improve existing technology/instruments to meet new product development needs. Strong background in optical and metrology instrumentation, such as imaging applications, optical coherence tomography, interferometers, surface profiling, wavefront sensing etc. Knowledge/experience in optical technology and system integration, with familiarity with optomechanical design; CAD skills are desirable but not required. Analytical skills, including data analysis using tools such as Matlab and Minitab. Background in physics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, or statistics is preferred. Software development experience desired but not required. What You'll Bring to Alcon: Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs) The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English 5 Years of Relevant Experience Preferred Qualifications: PhD or equivalent advanced degree, with demonstrated experience in optical or metrology system development for complex engineering applications.
