Role Summary
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based scientist who acts as an extension of the US Medical Affairs organization, responsible for developing and enhancing professional relationships with medical thought leaders involved in various phases of product development and providing medical information through scientific exchange and clinical/scientific support.
Responsibilities
- Identify and develop peer-to-peer relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs) and healthcare providers within the therapeutic area.
- Develop and execute territory plans in alignment with US Medical Affairs plans.
- Identify and communicate key clinical and research issues and insights from KOLs to appropriate departments.
- Participate in medical education for healthcare professionals (HCPs) through on-site presentations at healthcare institutions, investigator meetings, national conferences, advisory boards, or regional meetings.
- Provide scientific support for additional activities such as medical congress staffing, advisory boards, and sales training initiatives.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the therapy area, Jazz products, and competitive landscape; establish reputation as a trustworthy source of scientific information.
- Support development of Jazz’s positioning as a scientific authority; attend relevant scientific congresses to stay abreast of developments and support KOL activities.
- Acquire understanding of local and national clinical practice protocols and disease management trends in the US.
- Provide clinical presentations and information in response to unsolicited questions in academic, community, and healthcare provider settings (group and one-on-one).
- Communicate emerging data and clinical experiences through scientific exchange and peer-to-peer interactions; provide support for data generation activities (company-sponsored studies, collaboration studies, ISTs).
- Support additional activities such as medical congress staffing, advisory boards, and sales training initiatives.
- Contribute to the US Medical Plan and input into local strategies and tactics; collaborate with cross-functional colleagues to ensure a Key Account Management approach.
- Interact with HCPs as a scientific resource to support activities aligned with the Medical Plan including advisory boards, speaker development, and clinical trials.
- Maintain company standards and Jazz values, behave ethically, engage healthcare providers in scientific exchange, document and report adverse events and product complaints, and adhere to Codes of Practice.
Qualifications
- Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: ability to communicate complex scientific information across diverse audiences; clear and concise communication and presentation skills; excellent planning and organization; strong strategic mindset; self-motivated and autonomous; quick learner, flexible, results-focused; excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills; proven collaboration with commercial teams while maintaining scientific integrity; strong digital platform skills; excellent spoken English.
- Preferred: success supporting product launches in a field medical capacity; experience managing multiple molecules or therapeutic areas; track record of clinical trial site support and patient recruitment; understanding regulatory requirements for field-based personnel.
- Education and Licenses: Advanced degree (PharmD, MD, PhD or equivalent) with at least 3 years’ experience in Oncology or Rare Disease; or licensed healthcare professional (RN, NP, CNP, PA or equivalent) with Master’s Degree and at least 5 years’ experience in Oncology or Rare Disease clinical practice; minimum 2 years’ experience as an MSL or equivalent; neuro-oncology experience strongly preferred; field travel requirement of 60–70%; valid driver’s license and residence within 60 miles of a major airport.
Education
- Advanced degree (PharmD, MD, PhD or equivalent) with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in Oncology or Rare Disease is required; or equivalent licensed healthcare professional with relevant experience.
Additional Requirements
- Travel: 60–70% of the time; must live within 60 miles of a major airport.
- Physical demands: frequent travel between meeting sites; frequent use of computer and office equipment.
