Role Summary
The Medical Science Liaison/Senior MSL is a regional scientific expert and strategic partner within Medical Affairs. The role leads scientific engagement with key opinion leaders, academic medical centers, and healthcare professionals, drives advanced medical education initiatives, and provides strategic insights to shape clinical development and medical strategy. The Senior MSL also mentors junior MSLs and leads initiatives aligned with medical affairs, including education, research, congress planning, publications, and cross-functional collaboration. The role focuses on building strong scientific relationships, providing clinical and educational support, and disseminating medical information to advance evidence-based medicine and patient care.
Responsibilities
- Scientific Exchange & Education
- Develop and maintain relationships with KOLs, HCPs, and academic institutions within the regional territory
- Provide balanced, scientific information on company products, disease states, and therapeutic areas
- Communicate with payors and formulary committees pre- and post-approval in accordance with FDA guidance, collaborating with market access and key account teams
- Strategic Leadership and Insights
- Maintain expertise in disease states, emerging therapies, and healthcare trends to provide value to internal and external stakeholders
- Participate and/or lead project teams driving tactical activities aligned with medical affairs strategy
- Lead advisory boards and other strategic activities to inform medical and commercial directions
- Gather and communicate field insights to inform medical strategy and clinical development
- Identify emerging trends and unmet needs within the therapeutic landscape
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Identify and engage key thought leaders and content experts across healthcare systems, payors, integrated delivery networks, and other key accounts
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Provide compliant scientific account support for commercial functions, including training for speakers
- Act as a scientific advisor to Clinical Research, Investor Relations, Business Development, and Corporate Communications
- Research & Data Generation
- Identify and facilitate research opportunities aligned with company priorities, including collaborative and investigator-initiated studies and HEOR projects
- Collaborate with Clinical Research to support trial site identification and investigator engagement as needed
- Participate in medical writing for abstracts, publications, and scientific materials
Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Pharm.D., Ph.D., NP, PA, RN, MD, or equivalent) required
- Experience in Medical Affairs or relevant therapeutic area and 3–5 years prior experience as an MSL preferred
- Deep understanding of clinical research, therapeutic area expertise, and ability to interpret scientific data
- Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills
- Ability to work independently in a field-based environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and PowerPoint
- Deep understanding of the U.S. healthcare system and medical affairs
- Expertise with KOL engagement and stakeholder management
