Role Summary

The Medical Director, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) leads the development, launch planning, and ongoing medical support for Biogenโ€šร„รดs SMA program, acting as a strategic partner and expert medical leader to improve patient outcomes and reinforce Biogenโ€šร„รดs leadership in SMA medical affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the global SMA medical strategy and tactics in collaboration with regional/country and cross-functional teams.
  • Lead the planning, development, and execution of high-impact medical activities, such as advisory boards, to gather clinical insights.
  • Provide expert medical input to guide clinical development, comprehensive evidence generation, and launch planning in SMA.
  • Represent Global Medical at cross-functional forums, providing expert medical input.
  • Partner with the scientific communications team to shape and deliver the strategic scientific narrative.
  • Review medical content, including publication materials, medical communications, and medical information letters.
  • Deliver medical presentations at internal trainings, external congresses, and other key events as needed.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders in the SMA community, including healthcare professionals and patient advocacy organizations; develop and execute global KME engagement plans.
  • Manage external agencies and vendors to ensure high-quality planning and execution of outsourced medical deliverables.

Qualifications

  • Required: Advanced degree (MD, PhD, or PharmD).
  • Required: Minimum 8+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience, preferably in SMA, neuromuscular disease, or neurology/neuroscience.
  • Required: Demonstrated expertise in developing and executing comprehensive medical affairs plans.
  • Required: Proven ability to establish productive collaborations with medical experts and external stakeholders.
  • Required: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong presentation capabilities.
  • Required: Skilled at analyzing, synthesizing, and conveying complex scientific information.
  • Required: Track record of meeting or exceeding objectives and delivering measurable results.
  • Required: Willingness and ability to travel up to 20%.
  • Preferred: Experience with product launches and lifecycle management across different stages.
  • Preferred: Ability to lead and collaborate across global, regional, and affiliate medical teams to ensure alignment and integration of insights and strategies.
  • Preferred: Strong project management skills and initiative in solving complex problems.
