Manager/ Senior Manager, Payroll
At Viridian, we are focused on developing best-in-class medicines for people living with autoimmune and rare diseases. Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Manager/ Senior Manager, Payroll will be responsible for managing payroll operations, as well as certain equity and related financial processes. This role involves close collaboration with HR, Finance, and external consultants to ensure accurate and timely execution of payroll, benefits, and equity-related activities.
This role is based in our Waltham, MA headquarters. Our office-based employees are required to work in the office three (3) days a week.
Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
- Process high-volume, multi-state U.S. payrolls for both exempt and non-exempt employees within a growing organization following established checklists, including off-cycle and special payments
- Maintain payroll state tax records and coordinate state registrations
- Partner with HR to support employee benefit enrollments, open enrollment, review payroll and benefits information in the system for new and existing employees
- Prepare and reconcile payroll audit files before and after each payroll run to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Manage and maintain time tracking to validate data before each payroll cycle
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and year-end payroll reconciliations
- Run weekly and monthly reports for Finance team members
- Generate project tracking reports and update hours as needed
- Support workers’ compensation, 401(k), and KPMG audits, and provide workers’ compensation data for insurance as needed
- Review employee W-2 data for tax reporting, and assist with 6039 reporting and review of 3921/3922 data in accordance with tax deadlines
- Upload grants and ESPP contributions to Fidelity and Certent platforms
- Ensure employee data is accurate in equity platforms
- Manage ESPP purchases and ensure enrollments are properly recorded for new offering periods
- Manage RSU vesting events to ensure appropriate tax withholding
- Monitor and respond to payroll-related employee inquiries via email and phone, providing high-quality customer service
- Maintain and update FAQs to support consistent communication
- Analyze employee benefit invoices to ensure completeness and accuracy, and work with carriers to correct invoices as needed
- Be the point person for any federal, state & local tax, UI claims or garnishments, etc.
- Develop, maintain, and implement policies and standard operating procedures to ensure compliance to internal controls
- Identify and recommend opportunities to improve processes and automate tasks
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field, CPP designation a plus
- 7+ years of hands-on payroll processing experience
- Experience with UKG and equity platforms (Fidelity and Certent)
- Strong preference for proficiency with NetSuite, will consider other similar ERP systems
- Strong preference for experience at a publicly traded company, preferably in the biotech/ pharma industry
- Expert understanding of multi-state payroll regulations and tax compliance
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Proven mindset of proactive continuous improvement
- Efficient independent worker with ability to focus and drive for results
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information with discretion
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to handle multiple tasks
- Strong commitment to ethical standards
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.)
- The salary range for this position is commensurate with experience
