Role Summary

Maintenance Mechanic Specialist – Refrigeration at the LA Plant & Van Nuys sites, focusing on low and medium temperature refrigeration, chillers (screw, centrifugal, reciprocating), HVAC systems, dehumidifiers, and building automation systems (BAS). Under limited supervision, you will perform maintenance, preventive maintenance, repairs, overhauls, troubleshooting and upkeep for manufacturing and facilities equipment. You will read and interpret electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic control systems schematics and blueprints, and may perform gas welding and use diagnostic instrumentation. This is a regular night shift, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.

Responsibilities

  • Performs breakdown and preventive maintenance of critical plant equipment on a regular basis, including process chillers, HVAC systems, air handlers, central chillers, pumps, and industrial control systems, in both cGMP and non-cGMP areas.
  • Repairs refrigeration systems at low, medium and normal temperatures, cold storage equipment, BAS components, and mechanical and electrical equipment as assigned.
  • Familiar with plant and divisional SOPs related to positional and department responsibilities.
  • Maintains refrigerant records in compliance with US EPA and SCAQMD.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs refrigeration systems and components, including HVAC, chillers, electrical controls, compressors, pumps, piping, plumbing, blowers, dehumidifiers and facility equipment.
  • Performs disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Responds to urgent and emergency work orders for the Refrigeration department as needed.
  • Closes assigned work orders in the JDE system.
  • Completes Change Control documentation (PRs) as required by the assigned work order.
  • Is trained and qualified on designated facility SOPs governing the operation of critical systems (Refrigeration, HVAC, Electrical, utilities, and local GMP practices).
  • Has familiarity with generally accepted building, plumbing, piping, electrical, and fire protection practices and codes.
  • Ensures compliance with NFPA, NEC, UBS, UMC and UPC in compliance with L.A. City, CA state and federal EPA regulations.
  • Follows safety rules and performs system repairs, upkeep, maintenance and operations in regulated environments per applicable agencies (LA City Building & Safety, SCAQMD, LA City Bureau of Sanitation, CAL OSHA and OSHA).
  • Attends required training and meetings.
  • Maintains a designated area 5S’d (Safety, Sort, Shine, Standardize, Sustain).

Qualifications

  • Required: High school diploma or GED; 6+ years of experience or AA or higher with 4+ years related work experience.
  • Required: Journeyman skilled craft training/apprenticeship certificate or commensurate combination of technical education and experience.
  • Required: US EPA Universal certificate.
  • Required: Proven interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to communicate effectively with internal customers.
  • Required: Knowledge of refrigeration systems, Environmental Chambers (Walking Freezers), Chillers, HVAC, electrical, dehumidification, pumps and steam heat.
  • Required: Basic computer skills (email and internet).
  • Preferred: Experience with using computerized control systems.
  • Required: Proficient in written and oral English.
  • Preferred: Minimum of 5 years maintenance or projects experience at journeyman level in pharmaceuticals or commercial industrial refrigeration manufacturing environment.

Skills

  • Troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for refrigeration, HVAC, and electrical control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic schematics/blueprints.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for internal customers.
  • Proficiency with basic computer tools and ability to use computerized control systems (preferred).
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to safety and compliance.

Additional Requirements

  • Work in controlled environments requiring gowning and protective clothing; hearing protection may be required in loud areas.
  • Must remove makeup, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish and artificial nails in the manufacturing environment.
  • Work in cold, wet, hot and humid environments, both inside and outside the facility.
  • May work multiple shifts, including weekends, or overtime as required.
  • Work around chemicals (refrigerants, oils, acids, alcohols, etc.) that may require respiratory protection.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 50 lbs; climb ladders; move through confined spaces.
  • May work in clean room and non-manufacturing support areas with gowning requirements.
  • May work in loud environments requiring hearing protection and other protective equipment.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces when required.
  • May be required to work in clean room and cool/hot storage conditions.
