Role Summary

The Lead HVAC Technician is a maintenance role responsible for overseeing the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems within a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. The position ensures HVAC systems operate efficiently and in compliance with regulatory standards to maintain optimal climate control for sensitive products. The role requires leadership of HVAC technicians and coordination with engineering, reliability, and PdM teams to minimize downtime and support GMP operations.

Responsibilities

  • Safety: Conduct daily activities with a safety-first mindset and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies during all maintenance activities.
  • Compliance: Perform work in a timely manner in accordance with GMP procedures.
  • Documentation: Complete all maintenance documentation, including work orders and post-maintenance records.
  • Communication: Relay vital information about critical equipment issues to appropriate parties through oral and written communication.
  • Lead a team of HVAC technicians and contractors in preventive and corrective maintenance on manufacturing equipment.
  • Installation and Maintenance: Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC systems including chillers, air handling units, and BAS to ensure cGMP compliance.
  • Monitoring Systems: Regularly monitor HVAC equipment performance to identify issues early.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose mechanical failures and repair HVAC components such as compressors, pumps, and refrigeration units.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Execute preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and safety compliance.
  • Collaboration: Work with engineering teams to implement system upgrades while adhering to safety and quality standards.
  • Emergency Response: Participate in rotational on-call duties for emergency repairs outside normal hours.

Qualifications

  • Required: Leadership โ€” Demonstrated leadership directing or overseeing other HVAC technicians.
  • Required: Education โ€” Associateโ€™s degree in HVAC technology or related field; equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Required: Experience โ€” Minimum of 10 years in HVAC maintenance within a pharmaceutical or regulated environment; experience with industrial HVAC systems is essential.
  • Required: Certifications โ€” EPA certification for refrigerants is required; additional HVAC certifications are advantageous.

Skills

  • Strong mechanical knowledge of HVAC systems including electrical controls and building management systems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to diagnose complex issues quickly.
  • Solid communication skills for interaction with team members and other departments.
  • Attention to detail in maintaining records and adhering to safety protocols.
  • Training and collaboration with other crafts and reliability teams.

Education

  • Associateโ€™s degree in HVAC technology or related field (or equivalent work experience).

Additional Requirements

  • Tasks require entering manufacturing areas with appropriate PPE.
  • May require support outside normal hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Travel to other Lilly facilities (minimal).
  • Role may evolve with the greenfield site transition and in collaboration with embedded contractors; backup support for HVAC supervisor as needed.
