Summary:
The Lab Technician 1 performs routine laboratory tests to support diagnosis and treatment of animal health conditions. Prepares samples, operates laboratory equipment, and maintains accurate records to ensure quality and accuracy in diagnostic services.
Job Duties:
- Prepare biological specimens for testing (hematology, urinalysis, serology, chemistry, endocrinology, parasitology, cytology, coagulation).
- Use automated analyzers, microscopes, and diagnostic equipment to test whole blood, serum, urine, feces, and other sample types.
- Set up and execute tests, review results, and release findings per ZRL Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Perform routine and non-routine analyzer maintenance (daily/weekly/monthly/as needed).
- Perform basic troubleshooting on one major department analyzer.
- Review and accept daily Quality Control reports and weekly Levey-Jennings charts.
- Handle and store specimens per ZRL SOPs; maintain a clean, organized lab workspace.
- Dispose of medical and biohazardous waste per regulatory guidelines.
- Complete laboratory logs (maintenance, environmental, cleaning) and maintain required records (medical records, courier logs/manifests).
- Prepare specimens for shipment to offsite facilities per regulatory standards (including DOT).
- Receive, store, and log laboratory/office supplies; operate secondary equipment (centrifuges, pipettes, heating blocks, slide stainers).
- Follow SOPs and Zoetis Reference Laboratories training modules.
Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
- Associate or Bachelorβs degree (preferred).
- 1β2 years clinical laboratory experience performing basic testing/operations (required).
- Preferred proficiency: hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, endocrinology, parasitology, or cytology.
Technical Skills Required:
- Strong attention to detail; proficiency with lab equipment and software.
- IT and LIS experience; comfort with computer systems/equipment interfaces.
- Team-oriented; collaborative; ability to work independently.
- Organizational/time management; excellent data entry.
- Strong written and oral communication; ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
- Fluency in English.
Physical Position Requirements:
- Lift up to 50 pounds; bend/kneel/stoop/crouch; stand/walk/sit for extended periods.
