Position Summary
- Assist pathology professionals with Immunohistochemistry (IHC), specimen processing, embedding, slide preparation, microtomy, and other high-complexity laboratory procedures.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform routine histology tasks: embedding, cutting, H&E staining, cover slipping.
- Perform high-complexity testing: grossing, processing, IHC staining; use automatic staining systems and ensure QC of stained slides.
- Execute laboratory protocols and SOPs; complete training and routine competencies for assigned departmental tasks.
- Maintain specimen viability and correct patient labeling by verifying case IDs, match blocks, and slides at each processing step; print labels as needed.
- Document activities in laboratory logs and the Laboratory Information System (LIS) per SOPs.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper working order; notify leadership for maintenance/repairs.
- Identify issues that may adversely affect test performance or result reporting and take appropriate action.
- Assist with related duties and special projects supporting the laboratory.
- Follow direction; identify and use available resources.
Required Qualifications
- 1+ years IHC/histology laboratory experience, OR two years as a Histology Technician Trainee, OR one year as a Histology Technician Trainee plus completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histology program.
- Meets high-complexity requirements via one option:
- Bachelorβs degree in chemical, biological, clinical/medical lab science, or medical technology (accredited), OR
- Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology (accredited), OR
- At least 60 semester hours (or equivalent) including: either 24 semester hours medical laboratory technology OR 24 science hours with 6 chemistry + 6 biology + 12 hours chemistry/biology/medical laboratory technology (any combination), AND completion of a clinical laboratory training program (ABHES or CAAHEP approved/accredited) OR at least 3 months documented IHC/histology high-complexity training.
Preferred Qualifications
- HT/HTL (ASCP) certification eligible/preferred.
- QIHC strongly advised.

Physical/Work Requirements (as stated)
- Work at a computer; inventory and ordering records.
- Visual acuity and ability to distinguish fine detail and pass a color discrimination test.
- Manual dexterity; perform sterile techniques.
- Sit/stand for long periods; repetitive motion.
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
- Possible exposure to fumes/chemicals (e.g., formaldehyde, xylene, DAB, alcohol), biohazards/blood-borne pathogens, and extreme temperatures.
- Use a microscope for extended periods.
