Position Summary
- Assist pathology professionals with immunohistochemistry (IHC), specimen processing, embedding, slide preparation, microtomy, and other high-complexity laboratory procedures. Works under direct supervision using standard procedures and written instructions.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform routine histology: embedding, cutting, H&E staining, and cover slipping.
- Perform high-complexity testing: grossing, processing, IHC staining using automatic staining systems; QC of stained slides.
- Execute laboratory protocols/SOPs; complete required training and routine competencies.
- Maintain diagnostic specimen viability and correct patient labeling by verifying case ID numbers, match blocks, and slides at each processing step; print labels as appropriate.
- Document results in laboratory logs and the LIS.
- Maintain equipment; notify leadership of needed maintenance/repairs.
- Identify problems affecting test performance/reporting and take appropriate action.
- Assist with related duties and special projects as required.
Required Qualifications
- 1+ year experience in an IHC/histology laboratory, or 2 years as a Histology Technician Trainee, or 1 year as a Histology Technician Trainee plus completion of an NAACLS-accredited Histology program.
- Meet high-complexity education requirements (bachelorโs, associateโs, or specified coursework/semester hours) and complete approved/accredited clinical lab training (ABHES/CAAHEP) or at least 3 months of documented IHC/histology high-complexity training.
Preferred Qualifications
- HT/HTL (ASCP) certification eligible.
- QIHC strongly advised.
