Role Summary

This is an outstanding opportunity to join a dynamic neurology team as the Head of Neuromuscular Research. Reporting to the Head of Neurology Research, you will be responsible for defining and leading the research strategy across established and emerging neuromuscular disease areas, including spinal muscular atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. You will maintain momentum in existing programs while integrating external innovation to sustain a high-value discovery pipeline and collaborate with Biogenโ€šร„รดs global organization and external stakeholders. You will lead a team of scientists and foster a culture of excellence and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Inspire, develop, and lead a team of scientists, fostering a high-performing, collaborative culture that values creativity, scientific rigor, and operational excellence.
  • Define and execute a cross-functionally aligned neuromuscular research strategy that aligns with Biogenโ€šร„รดs broader neurology research vision and organizational goals.
  • Deliver high-value neuromuscular research programs into clinical studies, prioritizing resources to address unmet medical needs and accelerate differentiated therapies.
  • Drive integration of external innovation into a sustainable neuromuscular discovery pipeline through research and partnerships, leveraging cutting-edge technologies.
  • Act as a strategic stakeholder, collaborating with cross-functional leaders for the neuromuscular franchise.
  • Contribute to leadership of a world-class neurology team and pipeline, informing organizational strategy and decision-making.
  • Represent Biogen as a thought leader in neuromuscular research, engaging with external collaborators, academic institutions, and industry partners to advance innovation and establish Biogen as a leader in neuromuscular disease research.

Qualifications

  • Strong scientific expertise. PhD in neuroscience or neuromuscular biology, or related life sciences field with 15+ years of experience.
  • Proven track record of leading scientific teams (minimum 5+ years), with ability to attract, develop, and retain top talent.
  • Deep experience in biopharma environment/industry (minimum 10+ years).
  • Open and direct communication style with demonstrated speaking experience and thought leadership at internal and external forums.
  • Experience establishing and managing external collaborations and partnerships, including licensing and innovation initiatives.
