Role Summary

The Head of Medical Omnichannel, Digital, & Innovation Engagement, North America Medical, will be part of the North America Medical Leadership Team and will develop and lead the Scientific & Value Communication function within North America Medical, serving as a strategic partner within Biogen to inform medical practice across therapeutic areas and pipeline. Reporting to the Head of North America Medical, this high-impact position will implement cutting-edge strategies that integrate traditional scientific communications with innovative digital tools, artificial intelligence, and multichannel platforms. The successful candidate will shape Biogen's scientific narrative across the portfolio while building next-generation capabilities that amplify scientific impact and enable measurable patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Drive and own an integrated Scientific & Value Communications strategy aligned with brand and medical strategies, making prioritization and trade-off decisions across therapeutic areas to maximize scientific impact and stakeholder value.
  • Ensure the successful and compliant execution of the Scientific & Value Communications strategy, including publications (abstracts, posters, manuscripts), congresses (medical booth, symposia), digital content, and Field Medical materials.
  • Serve as Biogen's external spokesperson and thought leader for scientific communications innovation at industry conferences, medical affairs summits, and professional forums. Present cutting-edge insights on the future of medical engagement, digital transformation, and AI integration in scientific communications.
  • Build strategic partnerships with innovative vendors, technology providers, and digital agencies to access next-generation solutions.
  • Continuously evaluate emerging technologies and industry best practices, bringing actionable recommendations to internal leadership. Monitor channel performance and leverage analytics (KPIs) to optimize communication effectiveness, ensuring data-driven decisions that enhance reach, engagement, and scientific impact.
  • Contribute to industry publications and thought leadership content that positions Biogen as a leader in scientific communication innovation.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Market Access teams as well as Global Medical teams and other functions (e.g., public affairs) to ensure the Scientific Communications strategy for the brand/disease state portfolio is aligned cross-functionally.
  • Manage relationships with external authors and vendors in the preparation and review of publications for assigned projects, including the management of publication review or steering committees, if applicable.
  • In collaboration with Therapeutic Area heads, prepare budgets and forecasts with finance and other relevant functions and effectively manage agencies for project delivery within budget.
  • Maintain a deep and current understanding of the external scientific communications landscape, including emerging trends in digital innovation, omni‑channel engagement, advanced communication technologies, and AI-enabled models. Translate these insights into actionable pilots, scalable solutions, and embedded capabilities within US Medical communication strategies.
  • Lead the development and implementation of digital and omni‑channel scientific communication strategies, ensuring seamless execution across channels like web, email, social, virtual engagement platforms, modular content systems, and data‑driven personalization tools.
  • Partner with Field Medical, Medical Directors, global medical training, and other cross‑functional teams to train, upskill, and enable Medical and Value & Outcomes teams in the effective use of digital platforms, omni‑channel capabilities, scientific content distribution tools, and modern engagement techniques.
  • Develop and execute innovative medical and scientific conference strategies aimed at elevating customer engagement, enhancing the scientific presence of the organization, and driving measurable impact through clearly defined KPIs and engagement metrics.
  • Lead, develop, and scale a high-performing Scientific & Value Communications team, ensuring clear role definition, strong performance management, coaching, and ongoing capability building. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and excellence in alignment with Biogen’s values.

Qualifications

  • MD, PhD, PharmD, or comparable advanced degree in a scientific / clinical discipline
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in the healthcare/pharmaceutical sector with 5+ years’ experience in Medical Affairs/Scientific Publications/Medical Communications
  • Experience in multiple therapeutic areas and /or leading franchise teams across a portfolio of brands is required
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and implementing digital and omni‑channel medical communication strategies, including experience with channel segmentation, modular content, and performance analytics
  • Experience designing and delivering training and capability‑building programs to Medical Affairs, Field Medical, and Value & Outcomes teams on digital communication tools and omni‑channel engagement
  • Proven ability to design and lead innovative scientific conference strategies that drive enhanced scientific exchange and measurable engagement outcomes
  • Strong understanding of the external innovation landscape in scientific communication, including AI‑enabled content models, advanced digital platforms, and future‑state congress engagement models
  • Experience with digital content orchestration, customer experience mapping, and omni‑channel content performance optimization
  • Prior experience directing external vendors and managing budgets is required
  • Candidate should be skilled at working with publication embargoes, working with journals and publishers, and other external interactions such as publication steering committee meetings
  • Represent a function within a matrix organization through a strong track record of excellent presentation, customer facing, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong track record of written and oral communication skills to develop and present scientific information to varied audiences and articulate messages succinctly
