Role Summary
Head of Clinical Biomarkers, West Coast Hub β lead the Clinical Biomarkers function for a portfolio of investigational therapeutics across late stage research, early development, and late/registrational clinical development. Senior leadership role responsible for strategic direction, oversight, and portfolio-wide advancement of the clinical biomarkers pillar. Manage a team of Biomarker and Bioanalytical scientists and collaborate with Biogen leaders across Research, Development, and Commercial.
Responsibilities
- Define and lead the strategy for clinical biomarker development across the WCH portfolio, ensuring alignment with enterprise goals and therapeutic area priorities
- Serve as a key member of the WCH Biomarker and Clinical Pharmacology leadership team and WCH Development Extended Leadership Team
- Serve as a key thought leader and decision-maker in biomarker strategy, influencing cross-functional and cross-portfolio initiatives
- Oversee design, implementation, and execution of biomarker strategies for WCH clinical programs, ensuring scientific rigor, innovation, and regulatory readiness from Phase 1 through pivotal studies
- Drive and support indication expansion and lifecycle management through translational biomarker insights and integrated development planning
- Recruit, lead, and develop a high-performing, diverse team of Biomarker leads and Biomarker/Bioanalytical scientists
- Mentor and develop biomarker talent, ensuring succession planning and career growth
- Serve as the key biomarker liaison with research, clinical development, regulatory, medical affairs, and commercial functions to drive alignment
- Lead biomarker development initiatives for the WCH, ensuring translation into clinical programs
- Lead strategic partnerships with academic institutions, external partners, and consortia to advance biomarker science
- Ensure resource allocation, budget management, and operational execution of biomarker projects, including outsourced activities
- Author and review key scientific, regulatory, and clinical documents
- Drive biomarker publication strategy and represent Biogen in external forums and regulatory engagements
- Champion adoption and integration of cutting-edge biomarker technologies
- Evaluate emerging methodologies and platforms to enhance biomarker capabilities
Qualifications
- PhD or MD/PhD in a relevant field with 15+ years of leadership experience in biomarker development
- Proven track record of strategic leadership and delivery of biomarker strategies across multiple therapeutic areas
- Extensive experience leading Director-level and above professionals, with talent development and organizational scaling
- Exceptional executive communication and influence skills with senior stakeholders
- Deep expertise in clinical development, regulatory strategy, translational science, and life cycle management
- Ability to drive cross-functional alignment across R&D and commercial functions
- Advanced knowledge of biomarker technologies (cytometry, immunoassay, genomics) and clinical applications
- Recognized thought leader with external presence in regulatory, academic, and industry forums
- Experience in B cell immunology, nephrology, and/or solid organ transplant is highly desirable
Education
- PhD or MD/PhD in a relevant scientific field
