Firmware Engineer – Embedded Systems

Job Description Due to business needs, this role is required to be on-site in Santa Clara, CA Agilent Technologies enables scientists and engineers to address the world’s most critical challenges through trusted measurement, analysis, and diagnostics solutions. This role plays a key part in Agilent’s product development lifecycle by delivering reliable, high‑quality embedded firmware for regulated and customer‑critical systems. The Senior Firmware Engineer contributes to the design, development, verification, and maintenance of embedded firmware across Agilent’s product portfolio. This role partners with cross‑functional engineering teams to deliver scalable, compliant, and robust firmware solutions that support new product development and sustained engineering. Key Responsibilities Contribute across all phases of the product development lifecycle, including requirements definition, design, implementation, verification, and release Analyze system‑level, hardware, electronics, and customer requirements and translate them into clear firmware specifications and interface definitions Design, develop, and unit test embedded firmware modules in collaboration with firmware and software architects Support verification activities by partnering with test engineers to develop test cases and automation using established test frameworks Develop and maintain firmware documentation in accordance with QMS procedures and applicable regulatory standards Debug complex firmware and system issues and perform structured root cause analysis Address complex and high‑impact design challenges in collaboration with architects for new product development and existing product support Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical, software, and test engineering disciplines Coordinate with other functions, such as manufacturing, marketing, and customer support, as needed Support design transfer to manufacturing and assist with field or service escalations when required Monitor industry trends and evaluate opportunities to improve firmware quality, development efficiency, and tooling, including appropriate use of automation or AI‑enabled technologies Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline 4+ years of experience in embedded or firmware development, including hands‑on design and implementation Experience contributing to at least one full product development lifecycle (concept through release preferred) Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within cross‑functional teams Required Technical Skills Strong proficiency in C/C++ for RTOS‑based embedded systems Experience with embedded communication interfaces such as SPI and I2C Familiarity with object‑oriented design principles Proficiency with Git or similar source control systems Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams and component data sheets for microprocessors, peripherals, and related hardware Hands‑on experience using laboratory test equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, debuggers, and protocol analyzers Working proficiency in Python for tooling, scripting, automation, and test workflows Experience developing firmware and documentation in regulated environments (e.g., FDA, IEC 62304, or comparable quality systems) Preferred / Additional Skills Exposure to analog electrical engineering concepts, including signal conditioning, ADC/DAC interfaces, and sensor or detector electronics Experience with CAN‑based communication systems Familiarity with firmware development in safety‑critical or compliance‑driven environments Additional Details This job has a full time weekly schedule. The full-time equivalent pay range for this position is $140,160.00 - $219,000.00/yr plus eligibility for bonus, stock and benefits. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
