Role Summary

The Portfolio Lead/Executive Director, Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) leads strategic direction, integration, and execution of chemistry programs across one or more therapeutic areas, shaping the overall discovery chemistry strategy at Bristol Myers Squibb. This role oversees Global Discovery Chemistry teams, guiding identification, prioritization, and development of innovative drug molecules, and leads both matrix and direct-report teams to achieve scientific milestones.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversee the portfolio delivery of multiple discovery chemistry programs, ensuring alignment with objectives and high-quality, differentiated small molecule drugs.
  • Manage site operations for Global Discovery Chemistry at the Cambridge, MA location, promoting a productive environment and supporting local teams in meeting strategic goals.
  • Mentor leaders, teams, and scientists, encouraging adoption of AI/ML tools and other innovative technologies to accelerate medicine development.
  • Promote collaboration and accountability within matrix and line teams to deliver impactful scientific results.
  • Ensure strategic alignment and progress across one or more therapeutic areas within the BMS portfolio.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in organic or medicinal chemistry with a minimum of 15 years of relevant post-graduate experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors.
  • Demonstrated success in leading medicinal chemistry teams that have advanced drug candidates to clinical development. Experience with ADCs, protein degraders, oligonucleotides, or macrocyclic peptides preferred.
  • Proven ability to drive scientific excellence and inspire cross-functional teams to achieve objectives.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders in complex R&D environments.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with a collaborative, forward-thinking approach.
