Position Summary
- Senior scientific leader combining expertise in immunology, cardiovascular disease, and drug discovery to contribute to departmental leadership, evolution, and portfolio.
- Drive early discovery portfolio of internal programs and external strategic alliances focused on immune reset, tissue repair, and cardio-specific delivery mechanisms.
- Develop discovery strategies within ICV TRC and across BMS capabilities in high-throughput biology, chemistry, and computational sciences.
- Evaluate external opportunities in immunology and cardiovascular biology; lead development and management of external collaborations (from early target discovery to IND submission).
- Lead discovery biology efforts including new target identification and discovery programs from target validation through lead optimization into clinical development.
- Lead immunology and cardiovascular Discovery Biology group (Lawrenceville, NJ and Cambridge, MA); interface with internal and external partners (including CROs, academic and industrial collaborators), publish, and present externally.
Position Responsibilities (Executive Director)
- Apply leading-edge principles and techniques to lead highly complex, multidisciplinary projects with external organizations.
- Provide strategic and functional guidance as a recognized drug discovery expert in immunology and cardiovascular disease and drug development.
- Champion drug discovery programs aligned to strategic research goals across disciplines.
- Recommend expansion or curtailment of programs based on experimental results/scientific information.
- Deliver strategic, financial, and operational impact for the company.
- Serve as a role model for responsible risk-taking and curiosity; actively mentor and develop scientific leadership and excellence.
- Identify, initiate, and lead strategic collaborations within and outside the company to drive long-term business value.
- Coach and provide feedback to develop team members and colleagues.
- Contribute to scientific literature via publishing/presentations/patents.
- Develop programs to systematically identify and validate novel targets and progress drug discovery efforts.
- Combine cutting-edge technologies, drug discovery approaches, and therapeutic-area expertise to develop new immunology and/or cardiovascular programs.
- Lead external collaborations with academic/biotechnology groups to advance target and drug discovery efforts.
- Identify and champion collaboration opportunities across BMS expertise.
Qualifications & Experience
Basic Qualifications
- Masterβs degree with 20+ years of academic and/or industry experience
OR
- Ph.D. (or equivalent advanced degree in Life Sciences) with 15+ years of academic and/or industry experience; 10+ years of leadership experience preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD with 15+ years experience (ideally industry); 10+ years leadership experience
- Demonstrated success in immunology and/or cardiovascular drug discovery, including target validation approaches, high-throughput biology, and drug discovery
- Broad knowledge of immunology/cardiovascular biology; ability to rapidly learn new disease areas
- Experience leading diverse scientific programs and cross-functional teams
- Ability to lead directly and across internal/external indirect relationships
- Excellent communication skills and ability to thrive in a highly matrixed environment with open scientific exchange
- Strong interpersonal, management, and mentorship skills across diverse expertise and cultures
- Ability to challenge the status quo and drive others to succeed
