Role Summary

Engineer - Automation Engineering – Historian Admin and Data Architect role focusing on automation, data historian support, and data architecture to enable GMP operations and analytics across site processes. Involves providing automation, process controls, and data historian expertise, and acting as the main Data Architect for proper data contextualization and democratization of operational data.

Responsibilities

  • Provide automation support for one or more operating areas and capital projects; drive right-first-time facility start-up and ongoing manufacturing operations support.
  • Mentor process control team on design, controls philosophy, implementation, and commissioning; coordinate process control work and develop the Automation Engineering Project Plan.
  • Collaborate with Site Area leads and System Integrators to ensure data historization and architecture are considered; provide periodic project updates.
  • Troubleshoot issues across Engineering and Operations; modify the site data historian (OSI PI) per change control and site standards; maintain system health and perform routine maintenance.
  • Develop SOPs, work instructions, and training materials for OSI PI, alarm management, and alarm notification systems; provide SME on data historian design, development, installation, testing, validation, and lifecycle support.
  • Ensure solutions are delivered by integrators and vendors aligned with site standards and data management strategies; define requirements for the system in line with industry and Lilly standards.
  • Design, configure, and test OSI PI platform components (OSI PI Server Infrastructure, DeltaV integration, interfaces with BMS/PLCs/Remote IO, Asset Frame, PI Vision); implement and support plant historians and related data capture systems.
  • Maintain validated state of site control systems; develop and execute validation strategies and documentation.
  • Provide automation support for capital projects including new product introductions; promote automation to improve productivity, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Develop and maintain a network of corporate contacts to leverage expertise when needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum B.S. in Engineering; 5+ years in Biopharma engineering, operations, or manufacturing.
  • Experience designing, developing, commissioning, and qualifying highly automated greenfield manufacturing sites using SCADA, DCS, and MES systems (DeltaV, Rockwell, Syncade).
  • Experience with OSI PI and related applications; cybersecurity and IoT considerations for managing systems; integration of DeltaV, BMS, PLC/HMI in manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of industrial protocols (BACnet/IP, Modbus, HART, OPC DA/UA, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, RIO); experience with backup/restore and disaster recovery.
  • Experience documenting with electronic document management systems (Kneat, Valgenesis, ALM); alarm management systems (LogMate, Win911); root cause analysis methodologies.

Education

  • B.S. in Engineering (required).

Additional Requirements
