Role Summary

Director, US Payer Strategy is responsible for securing patient access to the portfolio across payer and distribution channels, including Commercial health plans, Medicare, Medicaid, VA/DoD, Employer, Health System, and Specialty Pharmacy. This role provides leadership on product positioning, pricing strategy, financial planning, and resource investment, aligning internal and external senior leadership and ensuring broad market access. The director collaborates with cross-functional stakeholders to drive market-leading access strategies and contribute to enterprise-level planning with a strong emphasis on financial acumen.

Responsibilities

  • Vision and Strategy: Provide overarching leadership and direction for Payer strategy, including pricing, access value proposition, financial plan/LBE/LRP, and resource investment; maintain a One AbbVie mindset across strategies.
  • Leadership: Set priorities for scale and accountability; influence across external and internal stakeholders; lead and develop cross-functional teams; integrate AbbVie Ways of Working and Talent Philosophy; coach to build high-performing teams and elevate marketing skills.
  • Action and Accountability: Lead the Market Access portion of annual financial planning, LBE’s and LRP’s; incorporate latest contract negotiations/strategies; ensure impacts to other channels (e.g., government pricing) are considered; serve as SME for 340B, accumulator/maximizer programs, IRA implementation, and advise cross-functional strategy.
  • Strategic Impact: Use research and insights to scenario plan, segment stakeholders, and optimize investments; formulate channel access and pricing strategies; adjust channel business plans to achieve objectives; deepen understanding of USMA Channel fundamentals to drive innovative access solutions; align product positioning and pricing across channels.
  • Collaboration: Transfer channel knowledge across the organization to enable optimal access on a per-channel basis; consult with Business Development on licensing/acquisitions; build customer connections with Account Management to harmonize market approach.

Work effectively with cross-functional and Market Access stakeholders (HEOR, Medical, Regulatory, Brand Leadership, Patient Services, Finance, Trade, Account Management, Employer, Population Health, Pipeline Development, Strategy) to integrate insights into planning, positioning, and strategy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Advanced Degree/Master’s in a related healthcare field desirable.
  • Minimum of 10 years of Pharmaceutical Market Access, Healthcare or Policy experience
  • Cross-functional experience including field sales, finance, regulatory, R&D, HEOR, Business Development, and other relevant functions
  • Strong proficiency in Marketing skills: Insights, Segmentation, Positioning, Value Proposition, Business Model Innovation, Creative Development, and Investment Optimization
  • Optimistic, inquisitive, and able to drive results independently
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build stakeholder relationships across functions
  • Knowledge of US access, reimbursement, and pricing landscape for pharmaceutical products (pharmacy and medical reimbursement); familiarity with commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, other government, and specialty segments
  • Experience with pharmaceutical marketing principles and practices, including strategic planning, market research, and regulatory understanding
  • Managed markets / market access experience, including experience with non-pharma Healthcare Organizations (e.g., Pharmacy, Health Plan, PBM, Hospital)
