The Director, State Government Affairs will be responsible for developing, communicating, advocating, and executing Sarepta’s strategy in an assigned region in the United States by engaging with state legislatures, state administrations, state regulatory agencies, and collaborating internally and with external partners (industry trade associations, coalitions, and third-party partners).
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary representative to public officials in the assigned region; develop and maintain strategic relationships to advocate on issues affecting Sarepta.
- Develop and drive implementation of Sarepta’s state government affairs engagement plan to shape a positive policy environment and mitigate negative impacts.
- Assess the political climate related to rare disease and gene therapy policies; provide policy/mitigation strategies.
- Represent and advocate for company interests through trade association committees and coalitions.
- Maintain a strong network of contacts; take meetings independently as appropriate.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders in the assigned region on strategy execution.
- Hire and manage external consultants (pending budget approval).
- Build coalitions with third-party partners, patient advocates, and medical professionals.
- Draft memos, educational materials, and presentations; make recommendations for action.
- Coordinate as a team player on key coverage for meetings/events/activities.
- Support interactions with state Medicaid agencies.
- Oversee compliance with state laws and internal ethical requirements for lobbyist registration, reporting, and political contributions.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years current and relevant experience in state government affairs/policy.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Thorough understanding of state legislative/regulatory/political processes.
- Prior experience as a state lobbyist (strongly preferred).
- Healthcare sector experience with knowledge of rare disease therapies and reimbursement policies.
- Relationship-building with elected officials’ staffs and policy leaders.
- Ability to write/edit legislative language and assess legislative/regulatory impact.
- Effective written/verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration.
- Attention to detail; ability to recognize issues within higher-level policy/regulatory context.
- Self-initiating, well-organized; manage multiple projects independently.
Skills/Additional:
- Up to 40% domestic travel.
