Director, Patient Advocacy is responsible for developing and executing the patient advocacy strategy in assigned therapeutic area/geography—ensuring the voice of patients shapes impact from preclinical research through clinical trials and commercial outputs. Develop, lead, and drive strategic patient advocacy initiatives that enhance business outcomes and strengthen corporate reputation.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Define, lead, and implement patient advocacy activities so patient insights inform pipeline/therapeutic area and regional leaders’ decisions
- Position BioMarin as a global leader in patient advocacy; represent the company and build trust with advocacy groups
- Develop initiatives connecting patient communities to Business Unit/International teams to advance priorities
- Build open, transparent relationships with key PAGS and identify partnership opportunities (including co-created/collaborative programs)
- Conduct community outreach from preclinical development through commercialization to inform clinical trial design and understand patient needs; ensure prompt feedback to communities
- Coordinate patient advocacy interactions across internal functions (Commercial, R&D, Medical Affairs) for a unified community vision
- Ensure advocacy engagement/activations align with business priorities
- Support the Patient Advocacy Therapeutic Area/Geography Lead and represent Patient Advocacy in cross-functional governance forums
- Serve as point of contact for incoming inquiries from patient groups, including Grants and Sponsorships (with compliant guidance/support)
- Develop strategic patient advocacy plans aligned with other functional areas; allocate resources appropriately
- For assigned areas: manage budget, forecast spend, and adjust to align with business priorities
- Support opportunities for employees to understand patients’ and families’ lived experiences
- Travel: ~30%
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of patient advocacy experience in healthcare/biopharma (rare disease experience preferred)
- Proven track record in patient engagement/advocacy with demonstrated impact from preclinical research to clinical trials and commercial outputs
- Sound judgment and ability to work seamlessly internally and externally
- Ability to influence cross-functional teams and build consensus
- Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing patient advocacy; strong understanding of the regulatory/healthcare environment
- Collaborative working style
- BS/BA in science, business, or liberal arts (advanced degree preferred)
