Patient Advocacy
Role Scope:
Director, Patient Advocacy—develop and execute the patient advocacy strategy in assigned therapeutic area/geography, ensuring the patient voice shapes impact from preclinical research through clinical trials and commercial outputs.

Responsibilities:
- Define, lead, and implement patient advocacy activities; ensure patient insights are used in key business decisions.
- Position BioMarin as a global leader in patient advocacy; represent the company and build trust with advocacy groups.
- Develop initiatives connecting patient communities with Business Unit/International teams and advancing key priorities.
- Build open, transparent relationships with key PAGS and identify partnership opportunities (including co-created programs).
- Conduct community outreach from preclinical development through commercialization to inform clinical trial design and understand patient needs; ensure feedback is delivered back to communities.
- Coordinate cross-functional alignment (Commercial, R&D, Medical Affairs) to present a unified vision.
- Align patient advocacy engagement/activations with business priorities.
- Represent Patient Advocacy in cross-functional governance forums.
- Serve as point of contact for patient group inquiries (including Grants and Sponsorships) and provide compliant guidance.
- Develop a strategic patient advocacy plan aligned with other functional areas; allocate resources appropriately.
- Manage budget, forecast spend, and adjust to align with business priorities.
- Support opportunities for employees to experience patients’ lived experiences.
- Travel: ~30%.

Qualifications:
- 10+ years patient advocacy experience in healthcare/biopharma; rare disease experience preferred.
- Proven track record in patient engagement/advocacy with impact from preclinical to clinical trials and commercial outputs.
- Sound judgment; ability to work with internal/external stakeholders.
- Ability to influence cross-functional teams and build consensus.
- Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing patient advocacy.
- Collaborative working style.
- BS/BA in science, business, or liberal arts; advanced degree preferred.

Workstyle:
- Remote possible; if within 100 miles of San Rafael, CA (94901), role is hybrid with on-site presence 2x weekly.
- Preference for candidate to be based in San Rafael for face-to-face meetings.
