Director of External Research & Development
Responsibilities:
- Lead Amgen’s business development efforts to identify and evaluate innovative therapeutics developed outside Amgen in the Inflammation/autoimmune space for potential in-licensing, M&A, or collaborations.
- Develop and nurture a network of key industry and academic contacts to enable robust external–internal communication.
- Proactively manage opportunity search and identification via networking and external landscape reviews; prioritize opportunities aligned to Amgen’s therapeutic area strategy.
- Lead technical evaluations by creating and managing cross-functional review teams; provide recommendations based on scientific and drug industry knowledge; ensure efficient decision-making.
- Ensure efficient reviews; engage in business negotiations and partner with legal to execute contractual agreements for certain projects.
- Lead strategic discussions and presentations with senior management, R&D, and Commercial to define priorities for licensure or M&A.
- Support out-licensing activities.
Basic Qualifications:
- Doctorate in a scientific field + 4 years of experience in drug development and/or biopharma business development.
- Or Master’s in a scientific field + 7 years.
- Or Bachelor’s in a scientific field + 9 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate with strong working knowledge in inflammation, oncology, or other therapeutic area.
- 4+ years management/leadership in business and drug development with technical R&D and licensing experience.
- Strong leadership, scientific, organizational, communication, and project management; ability to manage multiple projects.
- Excellent presentation skills; problem-solving, prioritization, deadline management.
- Demonstrated relationship-building with internal and external parties.
- Professional demeanor; strong decision-making.
- Ability to work independently, manage large cross-functional teams, and mentor.
