Role Summary
The Director, Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Team Lead – Pain, US provides leadership for the US Pain MSL team, oversees performance and development, and drives the strategy and execution of non-promotional medical activities. This role ensures compliant, evidence-based communications with KOLs and healthcare professionals, supports team objectives, and partners with the US Pain Medical Lead and broader Medical Affairs leadership to advance company goals.

- Provide US Pain MSLs with day-to-day support and direction for normal business activities; define team objectives, strategies, tactics, metrics, and targets in alignment with leadership and company objectives; develop MSL Team members
- Engage in non-promotional, truthful, evidence-based communications with KOLs/HCPs using educational materials approved by the MRC
- Draft, execute, monitor and adapt independent US MSL Stakeholder Engagement Plans for target KOLs/HCPs
- Receive support and direction for normal asset/disease-state-level MSL activities including travel, HCP interactions and congress attendance
- Provide monthly summaries of activities and achievements to US Pain Medical Lead; interact with senior leaders and apply advanced negotiations
- Submit expense reports and PTO requests in a timely manner
- Document HCP Interactions in VEEVA
- Respond to Unsolicited Medical Requests (UMRs) from HCPs or external stakeholders
- Identify and communicate internally the activities of rival Medical Affairs organizations with target KOLs/HCPs
- Identify internal unmet medical education needs of target KOLs/HCPs; articulate complex ideas and persuade others to adopt new viewpoints
- Partner with US Pain Medical Lead to develop independent, innovative, nonpromotional medical education materials that address unmet educational needs
- Gather and communicate KOL insights to inform independent Medical Affairs strategy
- Develop and communicate independent Ad Board, Congress & Customer Insight Reports
- Staff independent Medical Affairs booths at congresses/conventions
- Provide training to internal Viatris functions on products and disease states using approved materials
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech or clinical industry; Advanced degree (MD, PhD, PharmD) required; experience in pain management and in people management required
- Knowledge of US Pain MSL team lead roles and responsibilities, clinical trials, therapeutic areas, SOPs, promotional laws and ethics standards; recognized as an expert in Medical Affairs strategies
- Ability to develop and manage collaborative relationships with KOLs, medical professionals, academic institutions, and patient advocacy groups; strong analytical and organizational skills
- Ability to interpret complex research, write scientific reports, and communicate abstract concepts to executives and external groups
- Ability to perform calculations, interpret graphical data, and understand pharmaceutical calculations
- Problem-solving abilities with semi-standardized solutions; ability to work independently and with guidance as needed
- Direct supervisory responsibilities; reports to US Pain Medical Lead; capable of leading others to solve complex problems
- US Remote; travel >25% of time (which may change) with potential overnight/weekend travel; remote participation may be used
