Role: Head of External Animal Activities, leading governance, oversight, and ethical standards for external animal research partnerships within Novartis. Responsibilities: oversee compliance with animal welfare, ethical principles, and regulatory requirements; shape governance frameworks; manage risk and assurance programs; advise senior stakeholders on complex scientific, ethical, operational, and reputational issues; ensure alignment with the 3Rs and public trust; lead external audits, due diligence, and issue resolution; and develop a high-performing global team. Requirements: veterinary degree (DVM or equivalent); extensive experience in laboratory animal medicine, welfare, and responsible research oversight; proven success in governance frameworks, enterprise risk management, and managing external partners; strong influencing and stakeholder management skills; experience with audits, due diligence, and continuous improvement; deep knowledge of animal welfare regulations and ethical review standards. Preferred: experience supporting business development, digital tools in oversight, or operating across multiple geographies. High-Value: focus on responsible external animal research, ethical governance, risk management, and stakeholder engagement in a global biopharma context. Work setup: hybrid in Cambridge, MA, with approximately 20% travel.
