Role Summary

This role represents AbbVie's interests before the U.S. Government with a focus on the Executive Branch, designing and executing advocacy strategies to advance AbbVie priorities across policies affecting investments in unmet medical needs. The Director will identify executive actions, regulatory opportunities and federal legislation, and work with the Legal, Compliance and Government Affairs team to analyze impact and lead strategies to advocate for outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and track progress across cross-functional teams on business-critical strategies for the enterprise.
  • Implement strategies in consultation with relevant business personnel and, when appropriate, in coordination with external coalitions and trade associations.
  • Proactively evaluate the executive, regulatory and legislative environment for potential impact to AbbVie and the patients we serve.
  • Stay apprised of business goals and strategies to identify opportunities; consult with appropriate personnel to lead recommendations and action plans.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key Administration personnel and assist with Congressional outreach as needed.
  • Enhance management and Business Unit understanding of and participation in the federal policymaking process.
  • Collaborate with Business Units on critical issues, leveraging senior leadership and internal experts to advance AbbVie positions.
  • Participate in formulation and implementation of the plan for AbbVie PAC.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelorโ€™s Degree (B.A./B.S.)
  • Preferred: Advanced Degree (J.D., M.A., M.B.A.)
  • Required: At least 10 years of experience working with Congress and/or the Administration.
  • Required: Significant Administration relationships to lead engagement with key policymaking personnel.
  • Required: Ability to master complex policy and legislative issues, think creatively and develop innovative strategies and solutions.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of the U.S. health care system and issues impacting the pharmaceutical industry; familiarity with Medicare/Medicaid, access and reimbursement, and therapeutic areas (immunology, oncology); IP and tax knowledge optional.
  • Required: Excellent written and oral communications skills; ability to communicate complex information concisely via emails, memoranda and slides.
  • Required: Advanced analytical skills to dissect policy issues and assess impact on AbbVie.
  • Required: Ability to create, implement, and track comprehensive government affairs strategies including lobbying and coalition engagement.
  • Required: Demonstrated success working in teams.
  • Required: Strategic thinking, decision-making and tactical skills to develop broad policy options and recommendations.
