Role Summary

Director, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is a senior-level role responsible for creating and implementing programs that ensure workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental protection for all Insmed locations. The role includes risk assessment, developing safety policies, managing training programs, and ensuring compliance with regulations such as OSHA and EPA. The Director will collaborate with leadership to foster a culture of safety across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and oversee EH&S programs, policies, and procedures to protect employees and the environment.
  • Identify and assess workplace risks, including hazardous materials and industrial processes, and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations; stay current with regulatory changes.
  • Identify safety training needs and develop and coordinate training programs for employees.
  • Develop and manage emergency response plans and investigate accidents and environmental incidents.
  • Conduct and manage internal and external EH&S audits and surveys, analyze results, and report to senior management.
  • Advise senior leaders on EH&S performance and improvement strategies; drive EHS initiatives and manage EH&S staff.
  • Build and maintain EH&S management systems, including SOPs, risk assessments, incident protocols, and reporting.
  • Design and deliver EH&S training for internal teams and contractors; maintain compliance records.
  • Oversee EH&S practices in the office environment, including ergonomics and workplace safety.
  • Chair and lead safety committee meetings to reinforce proactive safety culture and alignment on risks and controls.
  • Establish EH&S vision and long-term roadmap aligned with operational goals; review programs periodically per regulatory standards.
  • Partner with Facilities and Lab teams to oversee EH&S plans across project phases.
  • Provide guidance to senior staff on EH&S requirements and oversee program implementation across teams.
  • Act as primary Insmed liaison for EH&S matters with outside agencies and regulatory authorities.
  • Monitor regulatory changes; communicate and implement necessary updates to practices and plans.
  • Oversee company-wide training programs related to EHS compliance; provide onsite and computer-based training.
  • Represent EH&S in external meetings with regulatory authorities.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive EH&S experience, ideally in pharma, energy, or chemical industries.
  • Deep understanding of EH&S regulations for chemistry/biology labs and pharma manufacturing sites.
  • Proven track record of developing and leading EH&S programs at scale.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and influence without authority.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to train and motivate diverse teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Relevant certifications such as CSP, SST, CIH, OSHA 30, OSHA 500/501, OSHA 62 preferred.
  • Willingness to travel to lab and project sites as needed.
  • Leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills for interaction with employees, management, and external agencies.
  • Experience with EHS Management Systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint.
  • Supervisory and team management skills; ability to coach staff.
  • Strong ability to research technical information and regulations and provide fact-based interpretations.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
