Role Summary

Director, Clinical Pharmacology at AbbVie. Leads strategic planning for drug development, communicates key Clinical Pharmacology information to senior management and regulatory bodies, and directs teams within Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics to achieve departmental goals.

Responsibilities

  • Independently leads Clinical Pharmacology/PK/PD activities and multiple major projects. Assists R&D senior management in action plan selection to meet drug development objectives.
  • Identifies issues impacting complex projects, leads risk assessments, and develops contingency plans to keep projects aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Provides timelines to assess portfolio opportunities. Negotiates with other functions on outcomes and deliverables to balance time, cost, and quality.
  • Provides expert scientific and strategic consultation to R&D, Regulatory, and management on critical decisions and development plans; connects scientific, regulatory, and business implications across teams.
  • Reviews clinical protocols and reports for regulatory filings; leads regulatory document writing, submission, and responses to regulatory comments.
  • Performs due diligence assessments, represents Clinical Pharmacology on BD teams.
  • Identifies process improvements and secures management approval for initiatives.
  • Leads development of departmental goals and strategic PK/PD decisions; provide leadership on clinical pharmacology and drug development.
  • Manages personnel development, mentoring, and delegation; leads cross-functional teams and maintains high-performing team dynamics.

Qualifications

  • Hybrid role requiring 3x/week in Lake County, IL.
  • PhD with typically 9+ years of relevant experience or PharmD with typically 11+ years; or Master's with ~17+ years; Bachelor's with ~19+ years; relevant fields include PK, PBPK, PK-PD, Pharmacometrics, systems pharmacology, drug metabolism/transporters.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; advanced knowledge across therapeutic/functional areas; experience across development phases; global knowledge of AbbVie and pharma drug development processes.
  • Strong leadership competencies in PK/PD, biopharmaceutics, and pharmacometrics; proven project management and cross-functional leadership abilities.
  • Ability to develop direct reports, provide constructive feedback, and build an inclusive environment for team success.
