Patent Counsel β€” Foster City, CA (onsite/hybrid: 3 days in the office)

Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive patent portfolio strategies across Gilead therapeutic areas (focus: biologic therapeutics).
- Advise research teams on IP risks and opportunities.
- Oversee and develop patent portfolios protecting the product pipeline (biologics).
- Draft and prosecute patent applications in the U.S. and foreign offices.
- Supervise/manage outside counsel.
- Advise non-legal colleagues on patent strategy and identification of patentable inventions.
- Partner with patent informatics on FTO and patent landscape searches; conduct FTO/landscape analyses and counsel cross-functional research teams.
- Review and assist with drafting/negotiation of NDAs, research, license, and other IP-related agreements.
- Review proposed publications for potential IP issues.
- Prepare and conduct IP presentations.
- Assist with regulatory exclusivities and data protection.

Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school; admitted before a State bar.
- Admission to practice before the USPTO.
- 4+ years global patent prosecution and patent application drafting (prefer protein biochemistry/pharma/biotech).
- Experience preparing/prosecuting applications (law firm or in-house) with a strong biologics focus.
- Experience with FTO and patent landscape analysis.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; strong client service orientation.
- Commitment to integrity, teamwork, excellence, inclusion, and accountability.
- Strong organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail; ability to work well in teams.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with small molecule chemistry (plus).
- Ability to manage drafting/prosecution across therapeutic modalities (plus).
- Experience with IP transactions (plus).
- Advanced degree in biochemistry or molecular biology (plus).

Compensation/Benefits
- Salary range: $226,185.00–$292,710.00. May be eligible for discretionary bonus, stock-based long-term incentives, paid time off, and company-sponsored medical/dental/vision/life insurance.
