Role Summary

IDEAYA Biosciences is seeking an experienced attorney to join our Legal team. This role will be the primary legal support for our Research & Development, Clinical Development, and Medical Affairs functions, reporting directly to the Vice President, Legal & Compliance. Responsibilities will include managing R&D contracting, advising on global data protection and privacy matters across the organization, and strategic support of our Medical Affairs function. The ideal candidate will partner effectively with cross-functional stakeholders to mitigate legal risks, identify opportunities, and enable strategic scientific and medical initiatives. Location: South San Francisco, CA. Onsite four days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel to the Research, Technology Ops, Development, Medical Affairs, and Rx+ functions.
  • Provide legal support for and strategic oversight of contracting for a broad range of R&D transactions, including research collaborations, clinical trial agreements, material transfers, CRO services, data sharing and data licensing, investigator-initiated studies, etc.
  • Advise on global, enterprise-wide data protection, privacy, and security matters including compliance with GDPR, HIPAA and other applicable laws.
  • Drive the development and implementation of internal privacy policies, procedures, and guidance documents to align with global legal requirements.
  • Develop and deliver training programs and communications to increase employee understanding of privacy obligations and best practices.
  • Provide practical advice and support to Medical Affairs on a range of activities, including scientific communications, publications, KOL engagement, advisory boards, grants and sponsorships, congress activities, medical education, investigator-initiated research, and patient advocacy.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams including R&D, Clinical Development, Medical Affairs, Regulatory, IT, and Finance.
  • Manage outside counsel efficiently and cost-effectively.

Qualifications

  • 5-7+ years of relevant in-house or law firm experience
  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school and a member in good standing of the California Bar, or the ability to qualify as California Registered In-House Counsel
  • Experience supporting clinical trials and R&D activities
  • Experience working with Medical Affairs groups in biotech/pharma
  • Experience with data protection/privacy laws
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively in a fast-paced start-up environment with internal teams and to respond in a timely and effective manner
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail

Education

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school; admission to the California Bar or eligible to qualify as California Registered In-House Counsel
