Role Summary
Co-op, Media Relations is a 6-month student role within the Global Media Relations and External Communications team. You will help manage reputation with journalists and top media outlets, support global product and pipeline communications, and analyze public perception and sentiment. You will be part of a multi-person team within a larger Corporate Affairs department and contribute to communicating the organization’s value proposition and brand promise.
Responsibilities
- Support corporate communication campaigns and projects across the company.
- Draft compelling communication materials such as press releases, social media posts, leadership emails, and blogs for corporate announcements.
- Investigate industry trends, key journalists, corporate awards, and external speaking opportunities at conferences or panel discussions.
- Utilize AI tools and platforms to develop analyses of industry trends and company sentiment.
- Prepare briefing materials and talking points for executive speaking engagements, journalist interviews, and panel discussions.
- Support editorial oversight of daily media monitoring.
- Identify and develop projects and communication materials to support the company’s position as a leader in innovative science and the brand, community and strategy goals.
- Work cross-functionally with company stakeholders and subject-matter experts to research, write and develop positions as needed.
- Liaise day-to-day with key business partners, marketing agencies, external stakeholders and internal collaborators in support of project deliverables.
- Comprehensive Media Landscape Report: compiling and analyzing a detailed report on the current media landscape, identifying key journalists and publications that align with the company’s interests, and assessing potential opportunities for media outreach.
- Content Development for Corporate Announcement: developing press releases, social media content, internal blogs, webinars or leadership statements highlighting a major corporate announcement.
- Executive Media Briefing: creating a comprehensive preparation kit for an upcoming executive media interview or panel discussion, including talking points, anticipated questions, and background information on the media outlet and journalist.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated interest in media/marketing or a passion for science.
- Background in journalism, media relations, marketing or business (desirable but not required).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong sense of urgency and keen attention to detail.
- Strong research abilities to gather information about industry trends and media contacts and use digital tools to produce analyses.
- Flexibility to adapt to a fast-paced working environment.
- Ability to think strategically and execute tactically.
- Maturity and ability to work cross-functionally with senior internal and external stakeholders.
- 21st century communicator with strong knowledge of digital platforms, social media, and awareness of emerging technologies as well as traditional tools (Outlook, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint).
- Eligibility to participate in the internship/co-op program: legal authorization to work in the U.S.; at least 18 years of age prior to the start date; currently enrolled in an accredited program.
Education
- Current undergraduate in media relations, communications, or related fields.
Skills
- Digital platforms and social media proficiency.
- Knowledge of emerging technologies and digital tools for analysis (including AI tools).
- Proficiency with Outlook, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint.
