Role Summary

We are seeking an Engineer – Kubernetes and Cloud Architect to design, implement, and scale a HIPAA-compliant AWS environment that will host patient-facing applications in a highly regulated environment. This role is both strategic and hands-on: you will architect secure cloud infrastructure, deploy Kubernetes, scale compliance requirements, and lead best practices across Kubernetes, AWS, Cloudflare and AI. You will own the infrastructure end-to-end, ensuring scalability to support enterprise healthcare workloads while collaborating with security, compliance, and engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain HIPAA-compliant AWS cloud foundations for scaled k8s healthcare workloads.
  • Stand up and own a new AWS HIPAA ORG via Control Tower dedicated to patient-facing applications.
  • Implement Kubernetes security controls including pod security policies, network policies, secrets management, and container scanning.
  • Collaborate with security, compliance, and engineering teams to ensure infrastructure meets HIPAA, GxP, and enterprise requirements.
  • Deploy Lilly’s AI Platform onto our k8s infrastructure.
  • Manage Lilly’s LGTM stack on top of our k8s layer.
  • Architect and lead deployment of HIPAA-compliant AWS infrastructure.
  • Define and enforce cloud infrastructure standards, patterns, and best practices across teams.
  • Implement encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, and access controls aligned with HIPAA requirements.
  • Lead technical delivery of infrastructure components, addressing risk, privacy, cybersecurity, and compliance constraints.
  • Design and implement Kubernetes clusters in regulated environments with strong security posture.
  • Apply and Review Infrastructure as Code practices using Terraform/Pulumi.
  • Mentor engineers and foster a culture of technical excellence in cloud, k8s and AI.
  • Drive innovation by prototyping new infrastructure capabilities and evaluating emerging technologies.
  • Ensure infrastructure aligns with Lilly’s digital health strategy and roadmap.

Qualifications

  • Required: 7+ years of experience delivering cloud solutions across the full lifecycle (design, deployment, operations).
  • Required: 5+ years of technical leadership experience in cloud infrastructure projects.
  • Required: Deep expertise in AWS services.
  • Required: Strong understanding of HIPAA compliance requirements (BAAs, encryption, audit logging, access controls).
  • Required: Production experience running Kubernetes in regulated environments.
  • Required: Experience implementing Kubernetes security (pod/network policies, secrets management, container scanning).
  • Required: Infrastructure as Code experience (Terraform/CloudFormation).
  • Required: Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States; sponsorship is not anticipated.
  • Preferred: Experience with service mesh architectures (Istio, ambient, etc.).
  • Preferred: Kafka MirrorMaker, Crossplane.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with GxP validation processes in healthcare or pharma.
  • Preferred: Experience architecting infrastructure for highly regulated environments (healthcare, pharma, or financial services).
  • Preferred: Hands-on experience with identity management.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with GitHub, Jira/Confluence, and modern collaboration toolsets.
  • Preferred: Demonstrated ability to propose and implement innovative infrastructure solutions.
  • Preferred: High intellectual curiosity and passion for cloud infrastructure engineering.
