Role Summary

Clinical Site Veterinarian at the Winslow site providing health care to animals in Manufacturing and Quality departments, ensuring local compliance with animal welfare and regulatory guidelines as the Local Animal Welfare Officer (LAWO). Supports the global Animal Welfare organization with policy and accreditation activities, working with Regulatory, Quality Control/Avian Services Team Leader, Quality Assurance and other team members.

Responsibilities

  • Manages Avian Health & Biosecurity: Implements, maintains, and improves programs for flock health monitoring, biosecurity, and cleaning/disinfection to ensure high quality and disease-free birds for research; addresses hatchability and incubation issues; provides technical guidance for chick health.
  • Provides Technical Expertise & Training: Leads and supports vaccine testing, husbandry program development, and training for personnel on clinical, husbandry, and animal welfare procedures; expertise in vaccine and challenge administration, clinical observation, and necropsy techniques.
  • Champions Animal Welfare: Serves as the Local Animal Welfare Officer (LAWO), ensuring compliance with USDA regulations and ethical treatment of animals; participates in audits, provides guidance to staff, oversees incident reporting, staff screening, and risk mitigation related to animal welfare; contributes to facility improvements.
  • Leads IACUC Activities: Collaborates with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to establish and maintain appropriate procedures; rotates as Attending Veterinarian and voting member on the IACUC.
  • Manages Select Agent Program: Serves as the Responsible Officer for the Select Agent Program, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.

Qualifications

  • Required: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and American College of Avian Pathologist (ACVP) certification.
  • Required: Previous experience with poultry and a working knowledge of relevant practices.
  • Required: Ability to obtain and maintain FBI background check clearance to work with select agent(s).

  • Experience with USDA regulations and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals; experience in Animal Welfare-regulated environments or pre-clinical/clinical models is a plus
  • Ability to travel as needed and work collaboratively across departments
