Responsibilities:
- Serve as senior scientific advisor to the Executive Team and Board, providing insight informing portfolio prioritization, corporate strategy, business development, capital allocation, and long-term growth.
- Partner with the Executive Team to shape portfolio strategy by integrating scientific/technical considerations into investment, prioritization, and business development decisions.
- Own and communicate the companyβs scientific vision, innovation strategy, and long-term research roadmap to internal/external stakeholders.
- Define and evolve long-term scientific strategy, identifying therapeutic opportunities, enabling technologies, and research priorities.
- Assess emerging science/technology to inform portfolio strategy and future growth.
- Build scientific reputation by cultivating relationships with key investigators, institutions, societies, innovation partners, and rare disease community.
- Provide executive leadership for the Research organization (with Head of Research) and ensure scientific strategy translates into research priorities and organizational excellence.
- Lead scientific evaluation and due diligence of external opportunities (licensing, acquisitions, collaborations, targets, platforms, partnerships) and provide recommendations.
- Build and evolve the research organization across early clinical science, translational research, preclinical collaborations, assay development, nonclinical pharmacology/toxicology, biomarker sciences, medical genetics, newborn screening.
- Provide executive leadership for Technical Operations (with Head of Technical Operations), including long-term technical strategy across modalities and building resilient CMC/manufacturing/analytical/formulation/process development capabilities.
- Champion technical innovation and align R&D/strategies across scientific, technical, clinical, regulatory, and commercial functions.
- Represent scientific vision in board/investor/analyst/scientific conference settings.
- Oversee Research and Technical Operations budgets.
- Champion evaluation/adoption of emerging technologies (AI, computational biology, digital innovation).
Qualifications:
- Advanced scientific/medical degree (M.D., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., Pharm.D., or equivalent).
- 17+ years progressive biotech/pharma leadership; significant rare disease experience required.
- Deep expertise in nephrology, immunology, metabolic disease, and related rare therapeutic areas.
- Proven ability to lead research organizations and translate discovery into development.
- Experience evaluating external innovation and conducting scientific due diligence.
- Broad knowledge of pharmaceutical sciences/CMC/manufacturing strategy across small molecules, biologics, combination products, devices, and emerging technologies.
