Data Scientist, Obesity - Senior Associate
Role Summary:
Hands-on analytics position in Commercial Data & Analytics (CD&A) supporting commercial strategy, performance measurement, and decision-making across Amgen’s portfolio. Based in Thousand Oaks. No direct reports. Requires three days a week on-site.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain, and enhance analytical and data science solutions for commercial decision-making (forecasting inputs, patient/market segmentation, performance analytics)
- Apply statistical and machine-learning techniques to large, complex commercial datasets
- Perform exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, and model validation
- Interpret results with commercial context and data limitations
- Write and optimize SQL queries to extract, transform, and analyze data from enterprise sources
- Work with cloud-based analytics environments and curated data assets
- Support repeatable analytics workflows and model deployment
- Build dashboards and visualizations (Tableau or Spotfire)
- Translate business questions into analytical approaches and communicate findings to technical/non-technical audiences
- Support commercial reviews, planning, and ad-hoc analyses; collaborate within CD&A
Ways of Working:

- Apply structured problem-solving and sound judgment
- Ensure adherence to data governance, compliance, and documentation standards
Basic Qualifications:
- Master’s degree OR
- Bachelor’s degree + 2 years relevant experience OR
- Associate’s degree + 6 years relevant experience OR
- High school diploma/GED + 8 years relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications (skills/experience):
- Python and/or R; strong SQL and relational databases
- Tableau/Spotfire (or similar); cloud analytics platforms (Databricks, Azure, AWS)
- Statistical modeling and machine-learning concepts
- Ability to synthesize complex analyses into clear, business-focused insights
- Experience in pharmaceutical/biotech/healthcare/commercial analytics
- Strong collaboration and communication in a matrixed organization
