Role Summary
The Business Performance Director is a senior site leadership role responsible for advancing the strategic, operational, and cultural performance of the Amgen Massachusetts (AMA) site. Reporting to the AMA Site Head, this leader serves as a trusted advisor to the Site Leadership Team (SLT), owning site-wide strategy execution, business performance management, and enterprise-level initiatives that enhance resilience, productivity, and engagement. This role operates with significant autonomy and influence, integrating strategy, operations, governance, and external engagement across the AMA site.
Responsibilities
- Lead AMA site strategic planning, including development, execution, tracking, and refinement of 1-year, 3-year, and long-range site strategies aligned to Amgen’s LRP.
- Translate site strategy into an integrated portfolio of prioritized initiatives with clear performance metrics, milestones, and accountability.
- Own site-wide performance management, including dashboards, quarterly business reviews, productivity portfolios, and transformation initiatives.
- Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Site Head and AMA SLT, guiding decision-making on priorities, trade-offs, and risk.
- Act as a senior member of the AMA Site Leadership Team, shaping agendas, facilitating strategic discussions, and independently driving follow-through on leadership decisions.
- Lead high-visibility, cross-site and cross-functional initiatives requiring coordination across PD, Operations, Corporate Affairs, Facilities, HR, Finance, Technology, and EHS.
- Perform Chief-of-Staff–like responsibilities for the Site Head, including preparation of executive-level materials, leadership visits, and enterprise presentations.
- Represent AMA in executive forums, site network discussions, and external engagements as delegated by the Site Head.
- Oversee critical site-wide programs including operational excellence, digital transformation, business continuity, risk management, and continuous improvement.
- Develop and maintain the site risk profile, mitigation strategies, and escalation pathways in partnership with the AMA SLT.
- Ensure operational rigor and resilience across the AMA site, proactively identifying risks and driving mitigation strategies.
- Partner with Facilities, Operations, and EHS leaders to ensure AMA maintains high standards for safety, functionality, and employee experience.
- Own site utilization strategy, space planning, and site calendar governance to optimize campus use and support evolving ways of working.
- Collaborate on the deployment and optimization of Amgen’s hybrid work and FlexSpace models at AMA.
- Partner with Corporate Affairs and site communications to shape consistent, high-impact internal messaging and site engagement strategies.
- Foster strong engagement across Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), site councils, and cross-functional communities.
- Strengthen Amgen’s presence within the Boston/Cambridge ecosystem by developing strategic external partnerships with academic, industry, government, and community organizations.
- Act as an ambassador for AMA, reinforcing Amgen’s culture, values, and patient-focused mission.
- Build strong, trust-based relationships across functions, levels, and geographies.
- Model inclusive leadership behaviors and drive a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Basic Qualifications: Doctorate degree and 4 years of strategic operations, or business performance/chief of staff experience
- OR Master’s degree and 7 years of strategic operations, or business performance/chief of staff experience
- OR Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of strategic operations, or business performance/chief of staff experience
- Preferred qualifications:
- Progressive leadership experience in site operations, strategy, or enterprise business performance within a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or healthcare organization.
- Demonstrated ability to operate at the executive level, influencing senior leaders and synthesizing complex information into clear recommendations.
- Experience leading site-wide or enterprise-wide transformation initiatives.
- Strong executive presence with exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Proven ability to lead in matrixed, highly complex environments.
- Experience managing risk, resilience, and business continuity programs.
- Track record of delivering results through a collaborative, inclusive, and professional leadership style.
- Experience working across global or multi-site organizations.
