Role Summary

Building Automation Engineer, Manager responsible for owning and ensuring continuous automation operations for three newly built R&D facilities, with future expansion into GMP-controlled environments. This is a manager-level role with a hands-on approach (approximately 95%) in system documentation, programming, troubleshooting, and implementation. Leads a team of five BMS members and collaborates with a broader team of automation engineers, with deep skills in PLC programming and control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure building automation operations have near-constant uptime (99.997%), including campus Hazardous Monitoring Systems
  • Program and configure PLCs—primarily Allen Bradley and Rockwell Automation—to control HVAC, lighting, and environmental monitoring
  • Program and configure Ignition SCADA systems and utilize PI Historian for trend data
  • Review design, deployment, and optimization of PLC-based Building Management Systems across new buildings
  • Partner with Ground Level Mechanics, End-users Sustainability and Optimization efforts
  • Implement automation strategies aligned with GMP operational standards and compliance
  • Coordinate with mechanical/electrical contractors, commissioning agents, and validation teams during construction or area changes
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting, repair, and updates of control systems and equipment
  • Ensure automation systems meet safety, efficiency, and regulatory requirements (including cGMP readiness)
  • Mentor and direct teammates while maintaining technical ownership
  • Document system specifications, change controls, user guides, and SOPs to support quality and audit processes
  • Assist in management of a budget to maintain building automation operations year over year

Qualifications

  • Required: BS/BA with 6+ years of experience
  • Required: MS/MA with 4+ years of experience
  • Preferred: Expert-level PLC experience with Allen Bradley and Rockwell Automation platforms
  • Preferred: Ability to own and operate campus-size Ignition SCADA system (potential integration into 38 buildings)
  • Preferred: Self-starter capable of leading continual improvement for this function
  • Preferred: Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, OPC)
  • Preferred: Designing, programming, and integrating building control systems
  • Preferred: Strong understanding of HVAC, cleanroom standards, and building compliance in R&D or regulated environments
  • Preferred: Ability to lead while remaining actively involved in technical execution
  • Preferred: Excellent organizational and communication skills, detail-oriented
  • Preferred: Experience with GMP-compliant operations or regulated facilities
  • Preferred: Knowledge of commissioning, system validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), and calibration procedures
  • Preferred: Familiarity with Ignition, Siemens Desigo, or PI Historian systems
  • Preferred: Understanding of network architectures, cybersecurity, and IT/OT integration
  • Preferred: Certifications such as LEED AP, PMP, or BAS-related credentials
