Position Summary
The Associate Research Scientist I (ARSI) provides independent scientific expertise and leadership for pathology-related components of research and development initiatives, serving as a primary pathology subject matter expert with minimal supervision.

Job Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary pathology advisor for R&D experiments (tissue selection, tumor assessment, pathology-related study design).
- Communicate pathology concepts, findings, and limitations; educate scientists on pathology considerations for experimental design and data interpretation.
- Review pathology reports; perform macrodissection/microdissection of tumor areas; mark H&E (tumor and/or normal tissue); perform quality control tissue work.
- Independently evaluate pathology-related questions/issues in research studies; consult pathologists for complex/novel cases.
- Develop, evaluate, and refine pathology protocols and standards to support rigor and reproducibility.
- Design and contribute to digital pathology tools and analytical approaches, including algorithm development, to improve slide interpretation.
- Review pathology-related data, annotations, and analyses for accuracy, consistency, and appropriateness for research.
- Identify pathology-related risks/limitations/opportunities and recommend scientifically sound mitigations.
- Plan and execute pathology-related research activities independently; prioritize based on project needs and scientific impact.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical/biological/clinical/medical laboratory science or medical technology with one of: Certified Cytotechnologist (ASCP), Pathologist Assistant (ASCP or AAPA), Histotechnologist (ASCP), other applicable laboratory certification, or internal training.
- OR Certified as a Medical Doctor (foreign trained acceptable).
- OR Bachelor of Science degree plus: at least 60 semester hours (incl. 24 hrs medical laboratory tech OR 24 hrs science with specified chemistry/biology hour requirements) and completion of an ABHES/CAAHEP-approved clinical lab training program OR at least 3 months documented lab training in each specialty for high complexity testing.
- Demonstrated independent scientific judgment in pathology-related research (interpretation of histologic findings and advisory support for experimental design).
- Experience collaborating with research teams and communicating complex pathology concepts to non-pathology stakeholders.
- Experience developing/contributing to pathology protocols, analytical approaches, or research methodologies.
- Proficiency with laboratory information systems, digital pathology platforms, and standard scientific software tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while consulting pathologists as needed.
- High degree of care and strict adherence to clinical testing protocols.
- Years of experience required: 3–5.

Preferred Qualifications
- Masters or MD.
- Years of experience preferred: 5+.

Training
- Job-specific, safety, and compliance training assigned based on job functions.
- Continuing Education: minimum 12 hours annually.
